The Hurt-Foust home and property is an important part of Columbia's history! An ante-bellum home which was the focus of Civil War actions, Gen. John Hunt Morgan, and home of one of Kentucky's foremost jurists. --Mike

Letter: Discussed park idea with Ms Foust

Billy Joe Fudge writes:
My last conversation with Ms Foust was concerning my thoughts of establishing an Urban Forest Trail System which would stretch from Russell Creek/Lindsey Wilson, in and around Downtown, in and through Foust Forest to the Pike/Pettits Fork area. She was ecstatic with the idea and especially the name, "Foust Forest"! --BJF

Letter: Hurt property

Martha Berry writes:
I hate to see the Hurt property be built on. It was nice to have a wooded lot so close to the Square. If the weeds were cleaned out but the trees left alone, it would be a beautiful spot. I love the idea of the area being made into a city park.

On a related subject: is the house on the Historic Preservation list. If not, it should be. The Field house is, why not the Hurt property? --Martha Berry

Martha, you are thinking right along with the Mayor and City Council - preservation and restoration. It's a Civil War era home and over the weeks and months ahead, grants will be applied for and goals and plans will be firmed up. It is a project that will take years but has the potential to be as important to Columbia's future as Central Park is to New York City. - LW

By Nicole Burton

Frankfort, KY - Gov. Matt Bevin has directed that flags at all state office buildings be lowered to half-staff on Saturday, Dec. 7, 2019, in observance of National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day.

This is in memory and honor of the more than 2,400 Americans who died in the surprise attack on the U.S. Fleet's Pearl Harbor base in the early morning hours of Dec. 7, 1941. President Franklin D. Roosevelt declared Dec. 7, 1941 "a date which will live in infamy" and signed the Declaration of War against Japan the following day, Dec. 8, 78 years ago.

Of the 1,177 sailors and marines who died on the USS Arizona, at least 19 were Kentuckians:

His daughter Pam Hurt Foust protected the 17.9 wooded acres and historic home until it was sold at auction and became the Brockman property. Timber was sold and some clearing has been done.

Today, in a special called City Council Meeting there was a unanimous vote to purchase the land and buildings so that the City can preserve it as a Park, belonging to all citizens for all time to come.

Letter: Supports Dustin Brockman

Vicki Miller writes:
I don't know this young man but I'll fight for his cause! That lot has been a disgusting eyesore to this town for as long as I can remember. There are businesses on both sides of his lot, all up and down the street & across the street.

I don't know what the problem is but I can't imagine trying to block this improvement. Please tell my why he can't proceed? Is there a neighborhood close by that's against change? What are the reasons given by the powers that be that are stopping him? I've read a couple of articles about his fight but don't recall any actual reason given. My word, this is a young man trying to make a living for himself and his family. He seems to be very nice.

Please someone on the council/committee tell me what's the problem? This is getting ridiculous!!! --Vicki

Record harvest for modern gun deer season

From Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife

Frankfort, KY - Kentucky deer hunters harvested a record 107,039 deer during the 16-day modern gun season that concluded Nov. 24.

"Season timing and weather conditions before opening day made us think we should have a good season," said Kyle Sams, acting Deer and Elk Program coordinator for the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources. "We had a poor mast crop this year, which puts deer on the move. We also had perfect weather: not too cold and not too warm."

General Fund and Road Fund receipts for November 2019

General Fund receipts rose 7.6 percent, Road Fund receipts fell 7.1 percent

By John E. Chilton/Greg Harkenrider

Frankfort, KY - State Budget Director John Chilton reported today that General Fund receipts rose 7.6 percent in November compared to last year. Total revenues for the month were $1,046.1 million, compared to $972.6 million during November 2018, an increase of $73.5 million. Receipts have now risen 4.4 percent for the first five months of the fiscal year, and can decrease 1.9 percent over the final seven months of FY20 and still achieve the current official revenue estimate of $11,462.0 million. Income and property taxes experienced the strongest growth in the month and helped offset declines in natural resources and nontax receipts.

Chilton noted that General Fund revenue continued to increase at an impressive pace in the second quarter as collections for November reinforced gains made in October. "After increasing only 1.1 percent in the first quarter of the fiscal year, revenues have accelerated in the past two months, increasing an impressive 9.4 percent when combining October and November receipts. As a group, the income, sales and use, and property taxes increased by $81.4 million over November 2018 levels. In contrast, the natural resources taxes continued to struggle, falling 33.0 percent for the month as coal severance revenue came in at an all-time low of $3.6 million. The income taxes in particular showed above-trend growth, climbing a combined 18.5 percent in November, driven primarily by increases in the corporate income and limited liability entity taxes. The Consensus Forecasting Group will consider the latest revenue and economic conditions when they convene on December 17 to render official budget estimates that will provide the basis for budgeting for the next biennium."

Beshear to make requesting government records easier

Kentucky Press News Service

Frankfort, KY - - Gov.-elect Andy Beshear announced Wednesday his administration and all executive branch state agencies will accept requests for public records via email.

The move will make it easier for Kentuckians and the media to interact with their government. Kentuckians can also make requests in person or via mail or fax if they wish to do so.

Earlier this year, the General Assembly passed Senate Bill 230, which paved the way for agencies to voluntarily accept open records requests via email, but not all state agencies have adopted the policy.
