Letter: Some names from the Old Adair Co. picture

Mike Watson writes:
This photo was made along side Old Concord Methodist Church on 704, late 1950s, or early 1960s, perhaps. I recognize a few faces, including: front row, just left of center is Rev. Noah Page; standing, 7th from left with dark hair is Finis Albert Harvey, then his wife, "Miss" Ethel; then 11th and 12th from left standing are Vina Stotts and Arvist "Dooger" Stotts; next standing is Arnold Coomer, then "Miss" Willie Coomer; front row, fourth from right in white is Lena Earls, I think.

I'm sure there others I'd know, but don't remember their faces from that time. Quite a few older Harveys and Loys, I think. Thanks for sharing this, Joyce! --Mike

September 23, 1977 Around Adair with Ed Waggener

This article first appeared in the September 23, 1977 issue of the Daily Statesman. Topics included a number of significant construction projects, the local literary scene, and a novel way to cut tobacco, plus high praise for the speech Earl Huddleston made at the dedication of Fairplay Meat Processing. --Pen

By Ed Waggener

"Drop the blade!" is going to be the battle cry in Columbia, if new projects keep being announced. It looks as though the bulldozers and cement trucks will keep moving in 1978.

There was obvious pride in a hometown company getting the low bid on the new Adair County Public Library. McLean Construction did the work on the Adair County Courthouse. Joe McLean and his son Gerald employ local men in construction, and two of three of their sub-contractors are from Columbia.

Hopes are high on the hospital
There still is no word on the FmHA loan for the new West Lake Cumberland Hospital. The loan application is in Washington now, and as one local official said, "You don't tell those people to hurry up." He did note, though, that word is expected within two or three weeks.

The jail may be now or never
Still, there is concern about the new jail. New standards are being set for county jails all the time.

Early Sept. 1959: Mr. Hoover crosses a bridge, and other items.

All sorts of news tidbits dotted the front page of the News in early September 1959.

By JIM

On the 8th, Mr. McKinley C. "Preach" Hoover, star route carrier for the Glensfork-Cundiff mail route, had the honor of being the first to cross over the just-completed Crocus Creek bridge.

Mrs. Pete Walker (nee Edith Hughes), under the auspices of the local DAR chapter, had agreed to speak on WAIN radio on the 19th about the Constitution of the United States, as part of National Constitution Week.

Several revivals were in the offing. At Plum Point Baptist, services would begin on the 14th, led by Rev. Edward Adams of Midway, Ohio. Meanwhile, Rev. J.J. Wilson of nearby Greensburg would hold a two-week series of meetings at the Columbia EUB, starting on the 13th, and another revival, evangelist unnamed, would open at Shiloh Christian, also on the 13th.

On the educational front, overall initial enrollment in public schools across the county saw a decrease of eleven students from the previous year.
