Bruce Harris, LWC '08, is Distinguished Young Pharmacist

By Linda Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com

Bruce Harris, a 2008 graduate of Lindsey Wilson College and 2012 graduate of Samford University's McWhorter School of Pharmacy, is the Distinguished Young Pharmacist of 2019 awarded by the Alabama Pharmacy Association recognizing him for individual excellence and outstanding service to the profession.

Even though he is a native of Ballard County in western Kentucky and now lives in Alabama, Harris still calls Columbia and Adair County home and comes back to visit regularly.

He said, "Only by the grace of God working through Lindsey Wilson College could this kid who grew up on a free lunch program in a rural public school, land in a welcoming, encouraging community like Columbia/Adair County, end up with Bachelors degrees in biology/chemistry and, upon graduation, be launched with the strength, knowledge and faith to go on to get a doctorate degree and jobs with top corporations."

WKU Endowment for Fly-Fishing Education established

By Tommy Newton

The WKU Endowment for Fly-Fishing Education has been established through local fundraising efforts and a grant from the Cabela's Outdoor Fund. The endowment creates opportunities to develop training opportunities, purchase fly-fishing equipment, engage expert fly-fishing resources, provide student financial support for fly-fishing academic courses, and fund other fly-fishing education initiatives.

Since 2015, the WKU Recreation Administration program has hosted screenings of the International Fly Fishing Film Festival (IF4), and many fly-fishing industry members have supported the event by donating items for the event's silent auction or making financial gifts to sponsor the screenings.

Letter: Many of us are proud of old courthouse

Comments re article 105630 Letter Tear them down

By Richard Raines

I agree with Billy Joe Fudge, especially if the additions are going to be difficult to repair.

I remember when the courthouse was renovated in the mid-1970's the small additions on the Burkesville St side were torn off of the building and replaced with larger additions that would appear symmetrical with the Campbellsville street side from Jamestown and Greensburg street sides. Best I remember, there was an addition on the Campbellsville Street side which was NOT torn down and rebuilt, just a foot or two on each end added to it to make it look symmetrical with the Burkesville street side (I think there is an expansion joint visible where that side was added on to).

I think it would make the building look much better to take the additions off and restore the outside to the origional footprint. I haven't been inside that building since offices were moved to the annex and the Judicial center, and I don't remember seeing pictures of the building with the pre-renovation additions, except for the picture on the "Whittler's Print."

I think a lot of us are proud of our old courthouse, just like the flag in Johnny Cash's song about the ragged old flag, whether we are Adair County born or transplanted from somewhere else. --Richard

Hampton sues Bevin over firings

By Tom Loftus, Louisville Courier Journal

Lieutenant Governor Jenean Hampton filed suit against Governor Matt Bevin on Thursday, asking for court orders that would restore her two fired staff members to their jobs.

The lawsuit, filed in Franklin Circuit Court, argues the Bevin administration illegally dismissed Hampton's chief of staff Steve Knipper in late January and deputy chief of staff Adrienne Southworth in late May.

The lawsuit seeks a court order declaring that the lieutenant governor is the proper appointing authority for employees of the lieutenant governor's office.

Letter: Funding is key for downtown

Comments re article 105630 Letter Tear them down

By Victoria Pike

I am wondering where the money to tear down the wings on the courthouse is going to come from. I haven't heard of any grants to help pay for it. The county is strapped for funds to do the necessary services. So how does one tear the wings off or make any major repairs to the old courthouse?

Just asking if anyone has any real ideas here to remedy the problem. Some have poured money into our downtown, while others sit idly by and let their buildings literally crumble to the street.

One of two things needs to happen here.

Letter: Shelf fungi can be a sign of problems for trees

By Billy Joe Fudge

Shelf fungi is indicative of heart rot. Heart rot is usually indicative of a tree which has been damaged, sick or in this case, maybe just getting along in years.

This appears to be a Sugar Maple and the condition of the bark makes me think it is showing its age and is growing in an urban setting. Trees growing in an urban setting suffer much from soil compaction, weed eater and lawn mower disease, roots running under asphalt or concrete thereby not being able to adequately absorb and transport water and nutrients up to the crown and carbohydrates back down to the roots. --BJF

Memory improvement from essential oils, shared by Andi

By Linda Waggener

A treasured cousin Andi Chelf, RN, shared these tips as my mother began to experience mild dementia before her death in February 2017. They were helpful in easing those months.

Andi called to tell me she was sending these in hopes they might help mom and then mailed them. She wrote: "Essential oils for use in memory loss - the fragrance of many essential oils exerts a powerful stimulus on the limbic system - a part of the brain located on the margin of the cerebral cortex, including the amygdala, hippocampus, and other components which interact directly with the thalamus and hypothalamus.
