Letter: Great American story

Chris Bennett writes:
One of my favorite all-time books is The Great Bridge, by my favorite author, David McCullough.

It tells the story of the building of the Brooklyn Bridge and the story of the engineers who designed and oversaw its construction. John A. Roebling and Washington Roebling, his son, also built the suspension bridge over the Ohio at Cincinnati.

It is a great American story! --Chris

By Trooper Billy Gregory

Frankfort, KY - Effective June 28, 2019, citizens of Kentucky were no longer required to have a license to carry a concealed deadly weapon in the Commonwealth. The change came from the 2019 Legislative Session via Senate Bill 150, which removes the requirement for a Concealed Carry Deadly Weapon (CCDW) permit.

US Ag Secretary tours Kentucky hemp processor

By Sean Southard

Lexington, KY - U.S. Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue visited Kentucky for an up-close look at the Commonwealth's hemp industry at the invitation of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell on Tuesday. Leader McConnell and Kentucky Agriculture Commissioner Ryan Quarles hosted Secretary Perdue on a tour of a processor and a research farm.

"I was honored to show Secretary Perdue why Kentucky is the epicenter of the nation's burgeoning hemp industry," Commissioner Quarles said. "Kentucky led the charge to make hemp legal again, and now we've approved more acres for hemp cultivation than any other state. This tour was an opportunity to show Secretary Perdue that the hemp renaissance is real, and it is already generating income and jobs for Kentucky farmers and businesses."

The tour opened Tuesday morning at Commonwealth Extracts in Louisville, which manufactures a variety of products from cannabidiol (CBD) derived from hemp. On Tuesday afternoon, Secretary Perdue saw hemp in the ground at Spindletop Farm in Lexington, a research farm of the University of Kentucky College of Agriculture, Food and Environment.

Letter: Kenneth Scott to be on Sports Talk Live and Local

By John Shelley

I really enjoyed the picture of the 1951 Gradyville baseball team provided by Kenneth Scott. The article has prompted me to invite Kenneth as a guest on our Wednesday night, July 3, 2019, Sports Talk Live and Local on 101.9FM or 1270AM, from 5pmCT to 6pmCT.

We are going to have Kenneth in the studio and ask more questions about the team and their travels. It was perfect timing for the picture being right in the middle of the baseball season. I thought you might share this on Columbia Magazine to encourage some listeners.

I also want to say that Scott Bennett and myself have really enjoyed covering the Little League baseball district on the radio and wish the 11 and 12 yr old Adair County team best of luck tonight as they play in the district final against Washington County at Idle Hour Park in Springfield.

First leg of long-delayed KentuckyWired finally done

By Bill Estep, Lexington Herald-Leader

An ambitious project to build a high-speed internet network across Kentucky has suffered delays, significant cost overruns and even setbacks from squirrels eating the cable, so officials were glad to finally announce a progress milestone last Friday.

The first section of the project to install more than 3,000 miles of fiber-optic cable around the state is done, U.S. Rep. Hal Rogers and Gov. Matt Bevin said at a news conference in Lexington. That section, or ring, covers the so-called Golden Triangle bounded by Lexington, Louisville and Cincinnati, with a line south to Somerset.
