National Police Week is May 12-18, 2019

By Jason Rector

National Police Week signals a time in our communities and across the country to pause, remember the fallen, and honor those who have made the ultimate sacrifice.

National Police week runs May 12 through May 18, 2019. Help remember the officers that died in the line of duty while trying to do their job. 163 Officers were killed in the United States last year alone. Officers are killed for many terrible reasons including violent attacks and accidents. Please keep the safety of our officers in mind. On the street, you can do your part every day by slowing down and giving us room to work.

If you weren't already aware, in 1962, President John F. Kennedy designated May 15 as Peace Officers' Memorial Day; and the week in which May 15 falls as National Police Week. The law was amended and singed by President Bill Clinton, directing that the flag of the United States be displayed at half-staff on all government buildings on May 15 each year.

ACSO Thanks Aimee Weddle and Adanta

By Sheriff Josh Brockman
Adair County Sheriff's Office

The Adair County Sheriff's Office has received 3 new PBT's (Preliminary Breath Test devices). The Sheriff's Office was currently short two, and had one that was badly in need of replacing.

The new PBTs were received from Adanta Behavioral Health Services in conjunction with a grant received. Aimee Weddle, a Prevention Specialist at the Regional Prevention Center in Somerset, delivered them this morning.

I met with Aimee at the Adair County ASAP meeting last week and we spoke of the need that we had at our agency for these. Before 10am less than a week later, we got them.

On behalf of the entire office we want to thank Ms. Weddle for her help and Adanta services for their work in our region. These PBT's will be used roadside and at calls where Deputies need to determine if alcoholic beverages were being consumed for investigative purposes. The PBT's run over 600.00 each. This donation saves our agency and taxpayers over $1,800.00. --Sheriff Brockman

KDA inspectors watching for skimmers in KY gas pumps

By Sean Southard

Lexington, KY - With the long Memorial Day weekend and summer travel season coming up, Agriculture Commissioner Ryan Quarles reminds Kentucky motorists that Kentucky Department of Agriculture (KDA) inspectors are on the lookout for credit card skimmers in motor fuel pumps across the Commonwealth.

"These devices are used to steal credit card information so criminals can use that data to make purchases that are charged on the victims' cards," Commissioner Quarles said in news conferences today in Louisville and Lexington. "For the fourth consecutive year, our inspectors will check for skimmers in addition to their normal duties at no additional cost to Kentucky taxpayers."

Under state law, motor fuel pumps must be inspected by KDA personnel once a year. Inspectors test pumps to ensure that the amount of fuel dispensed matches the amount shown on the pump, and check to make sure each pump is in proper working order.

Adair County Teachers, 1939

Historian Mike Watson provides an interesting look at the teacher selection process in the earlier part of the 20th Century in Adair County.

By Mike Watson

Where would this world be without teachers? I had some great ones! Last week was Teacher Appreciation Week and many deserving comments were made about the profession and about the individuals who give all they can to improve our children.

Here is a list of teachers--and all the community schools--in Adair County in 1939, including the Columbia schools. Segregation was still a part of life and segregated school were a fact of that lifetime. Note there were 96 schools in the county outside the limits of town.

County School Teachers Named:
