Sickout subpeonas headed to court AG says Governor's retaliation efforts violate teachers' constitutional rights to free speech By Crystal Staley/Kenneth Mansfield Frankfort, KY - - In an effort to defend teachers' First Amendment rights, Attorney General Andy Beshear, joined by the Jefferson County Teachers Association (JCTA), filed a lawsuit today in Franklin Circuit Court to stop the governor's unlawful "sickout" subpoenas. After the governor and his Labor Cabinet refused to rescind their subpoenas last week, Beshear filed suit and is asking a judge to issue a temporary restraining order to ensure school districts are not forced to respond to the subpoenas by the May 10 deadline and to protect teachers from being fined. At issue in the case is the administration's use of a state labor law to seek records and names of teachers and possibly fine them up to $1,000 a day for allegedly using sick days to attend rallies in support of public education. Beshear said the labor secretary does not have the authority to request the information or penalize teachers. History Bite: Pollard's Chapel By Mike Watson Pollard's Chapel Methodist Church--The first Pollard's Chapel building was constructed of logs and was used for many years with but an earthen floor. This structure may have been erected as early as 1840, with the congregation organized as much as a decade earlier. It was located near the present church, in northwestern Adair County. The church takes its name from the Pollard family, who were settlers in the area in the late 1830s. Mrs. Mahala Pollard, then in her mid-seventies, donated one acre of land to the trustees in 1871. The present building was dedicated in 1921. It was constructed from the previous building's poplar logs, sawed into new lumber. "Mr. Mont Pollard said, in 1965, the old log church was about 125 years old. It seems a class was first organized in about 1830. Some of the early preachers at this time were George W. Taylor, Joel Peak, W.L. Morrison, Robert Fisk, Jesse L. Murrell, Bryant A. Cundiff, and James Breeding. Letter: of snow sleds and Sparksville memories Billy Joe fudge writes: Yes, I remember living in the "Alpine Region" of Adair County and it's inordinate amount of snow sleds per capita compared to the lower regions. In fact, according to most, many of us from Sparksville and Breeding would have to load up our snow sleds and come in to town in order to accommodate the numbers of youth seeking to commit hara-kiri on Grade School Hill.Comments re article 103716 April 4 1978 Around Adair with Ed Waggener 2019-04-29 03:05:48 | Comments | Printable version Birthdays and Anniversaries for April 29 Happy Anniversary, Stephen and Kelly Franklin | (Updates/Corrections) Happy Birthday, Betty Crawhorn | (Updates/Corrections) Happy Birthday, Brianna Paige Caldwell (2006) | (Updates/Corrections) Happy Birthday, Chris Collins | (Updates/Corrections) Happy Birthday, Hank Chadwell Rice (2015) | (Updates/Corrections) Happy Birthday, Jordan and Justin Tucker (2004) | (Updates/Corrections) Happy Birthday, Justin Hancock | (Updates/Corrections) Happy Birthday, Nancy Holmes | (Updates/Corrections) Happy Birthday, Reta Gentry | (Updates/Corrections) Happy Birthday, Ronald Smith | (Updates/Corrections) Happy Birthday, Tracy Young Sharpe | (Updates/Corrections) In Memory Birthday, Helen Rodgers, 91, Casey County, KY (1926-2017) | (Updates/Corrections) In Memory Birthday, Mr. Ronnie Lynn Cox, Taylor County, KY (1959-2015) | (Updates/Corrections) In Memory Birthday, Janet Sue Corbin Lee, Somerset, KY, Adair native (1941-2016) | (Updates/Corrections) In Memory Birthday, Weldon Lee Baker, Sr., Cumberland Co. native (1931-2019) | (Updates/Corrections) In Memory Birthday, Lottie Burchett, Adair Co., KY (1923-2009) | (Updates/Corrections) In Memory Birthday, Rebecca M.
