New State Record Largemouth Bass Caught in Harlan Co

Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife

Frankfort, KY - Evarts resident Mark Ward went fishing after work on Good Friday, April 19, at 6-acre Highsplint Lake in Harlan County with his wife and 9-month-old daughter.

It rained all day in Harlan County on Good Friday, but finally cleared up just before he got off work. The water in Highsplint Lake grew a bit murky from the rain, but he saw a nice-sized 4-pound bass in the shallows.

"I pitched a lizard in there and the 4-pounder showed interest," Ward said. "Then, another came in and looked like a big log. The 4-pound fish triggered her to pick it up. I set the hook and it was on. Good Friday turned into a great Friday for me."

It was the first cast of the day for Ward and produced the new Kentucky record largemouth bass, a 14-pound, 9.5-ounce brute.

Hooked On Science Program at ACPC

By Laura Marcum

We recently had Jason Lindsey, aka "Mr. Science", visit Adair County Primary Center to present his program "Hooked on Science".

Each grade level focused on different topics. Kindergarten learned about force and motion. First Grade learned about light and sound. Second grade learned about matter. Mr. Science wowed us all with exciting visual effects supported by the science reasoning behind them. Several students were able to join him in the program presentation.

You can find out more about Hooked on Science and see their weekly science activities by visiting their website at hookedonscience.org.

Some Bluegrass phone calls interrupted, engineers at work

By Linda Waggener

A friend texted my usual phone number, 270-403-0017, and said she'd tried to call that same number and gotten a beeping sound. She tried a text and it did fine. I tried to call her number and got a beeping sound.

A second call effort to my number from another phone resulted in a message that mine was not a valid number.

I clicked the DuoBroadband side logo on ColumbiaMagazine.com in hopes that I could live chat. A nice person named Cody explained that Bluegrass is aware of some area call problems and engineers are at work on it. He said test it again in a little while.

50 Years: a letter from LCADD Executive Director McGaha

LCADD has always maintained a professional staff that has one purpose - to work for the betterment of our counties and cities in a positive manner that will improve economic growth and enhance the lives of current and future residents.

Darryl McGaha, LCADD Executive Director

Reaching the milestone of celebrating the 50th anniversary for Lake Cumberland Area Development District (LCADD) is an exciting occasion and the result of great effort and commitment of a great number of individuals. The LCADD came into being on April 23rd, 1969 with one employee. Within 13 months, the agency expanded to four employees dealing mainly with economic development. Today we currently have 88 employees within seven departments who deliver various services that benefit the residents and local governmental entities with our 10 county area. We continue to look for other resources that would enhance the quantity and quality of services that can be delivered through LCADD.
