GM Bowling Green plant to add 400-plus jobs

Warren County facility preparing for next-generation Corvette, America's most advanced series-production sports car

By Nicole Burton/Jack Mazurak

Bowling Green, KY - Gov. Matt Bevin today joined General Motors Co. Chairman and CEO Mary Barra among federal, state and local officials in announcing and welcoming the company's plans to add a second shift and more than 400 new employees at the Bowling Green Assembly Plant in preparation to build the next-generation Chevrolet Corvette later this year.

"What a great day for Kentucky! I often speak about how we are the engineering and manufacturing hub of America. Today, we're wearing that title more boldly than ever," Gov. Bevin said. "These new workers, together with the plant's current employees, will not only build the iconic Corvette and carry forward the nearly 40-year marriage between Corvette and Kentucky, but will also be members of the team that launches the technical tour-de-force, eighth-generation car off the production line and onto the global stage. Our commonwealth is incredibly proud to be the home of the Corvette. We are grateful to Mary Barra and GM for the relationship we share, and for this strong vote of confidence in Kentucky's future."

The new jobs will push the plant's total employment beyond 1,300.

"The Corvette's iconic status owes so much to the men and women of Bowling Green, where it has been built exclusively for almost 40 years," Barra said. "This is the workforce that can deliver a next generation Corvette worthy of both its historic past and an equally exciting future, and today's announcement gets us one step closer to its reveal on July 18."

KY AG joins amicus brief supporting FOSTA

By Crystal Staley/Kenneth Mansfield

Frankfort, KY - Attorney General Andy Beshear and a coalition of 20 other state attorneys general filed a friend-of-the-court brief in support of a federal law that gives states greater authority to hold human traffickers accountable.

An amicus brief filed this week urges the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit to uphold a lower court dismissal of a constitutional challenge to the Allow States and Victims to Fight Online Sex Trafficking Act (FOSTA).

The act allows state prosecutors to take legal action against websites that host sex-trafficking ads, pursue criminals who deliberately facilitate trafficking online and file civil suits against anyone violating federal prostitution laws.

Court says chalking violates 4th Amendment

By Austin Ramsey, The Messenger-Inquirer

A federal appeals court ruling this week may lead the city of Owensboro and local law enforcement to rethink downtown parking enforcement. The 6th Circuit Court of Appeals on Monday ruled that "chalking" as a method of determining how long a vehicle has occupied a parking space is a violation of the Fourth Amendment.

In a unanimous, three-judge panel decision, the court found that an officer marking vehicle tires with chalk is an unlawful form of trespass that should require a warrant. The court has jurisdiction over Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio and Tennessee.
