Moon landing headline reminded me of Grandma's priorities

By Linda Waggener

Everybody has their priorities. Even this "Giant Step for Mankind" didn't really matter enough to overtake my grandmother's priorities of her day. I can never be reminded of the first moon landing without remembering how frustrated my Grandmother Addie Turner Leftwich was at the television coverage that day.

The historic moment in American history was met with Grandma's comment in a telephone conversation with her sister Ida Gassaway on her phone on down the road toward Glasgow, "I just can't believe they'd put this old moon landing stuff on over our program!"

Letter: On Magnolias

Billy Joe Fudge writes:
Yes Linda Waggener, the other leafy evergreen gracing Columbia's Urban Forest is "Southern Magnolia". Southern Magnolia is a true Southerner. It's native range stretches across the South from Texas to the East Coast. It's native range does take a sashay Northward from Maryland into Pennsylvania, however.

Yes Linda Lewis, one can be seen standing beside Winter Beauty III. Together they light up street corner quite nicely. --BJF
