Moon landing headline reminded me of Grandma's priorities

By Linda Waggener

Everybody has their priorities. Even this "Giant Step for Mankind" didn't really matter enough to overtake my grandmother's priorities of her day. I can never be reminded of the first moon landing without remembering how frustrated my Grandmother Addie Turner Leftwich was at the television coverage that day.

The historic moment in American history was met with Grandma's comment in a telephone conversation with her sister Ida Gassaway on her phone on down the road toward Glasgow, "I just can't believe they'd put this old moon landing stuff on over our program!"

Their "program", discussed every day after the show ended, was As the World Turns."

For more on the TV show Grandma was talking about, here's writer Carol Perkins' review of the Soap Opera as it came to a close in 2010.
