Remembering Junior and Ed

Commentary from a reader:

I would like to give one version of a man that I knew for about two years personally, and knew of a long time before that but actually met and had conversations with him for a couple years. The caliber of this man cannot be surpassed in this town, he was probably the most adamant stubborn hardheaded good hearted people you would ever meet in your life.

He answered my calls night and day. I was introduced to him by another good friend of mine, Ed Waggener. They both laughed and joked with me, both called me, both gave me the utmost respect. I cared for both of them and I've lost both of them in six months. They were great people. There are people that this community cannot replace.

Letter: Grateful for new businesses investing in New Columbia

Victoria Pike writes:
The new store next to Black Stallion steakhouse is a Dollar Tree which is not the same as a Dollar Store. Also, the Marathon is not the same as BP Fivestar. At least we will have competition in the gas market here on the fastest growing ramp from the Cumberland Parkway.

I don't understand why all the negativity about development in this area. When we had nothing out here, people complained we had nothing. Now that we do, people still continue to make negative comments. For those who are still dissatisfied, I suggest you get involved and try to make a difference in your community instead of trying to tear down the good that is taking place here.

Never in my lifetime has there been so much development in our community in such a short time. I thank those who have invested their money here to make this a better place to live. The medical facilities alone are a tremendous asset. With quicker access to urgent care services that I know have saved lives--among them a friend and neighbor. So, I guess, I'm a little sensitive to negative comments. Everyone is entitled to their opinion and their right to express it. --Victoria

Letter: my brother could spell almost anything, not me

"You may complain about my spelling, something I'm famous for! Ed was as close to perfect with his spelling as anyone I've ever known. I was the only one of the six that could not spell."

By Ralph Roy Waggener

My brother Ed Waggener one time wrote about the city police, the mayor's men. He was setting at his nifty electric typewriter typing the story. The Late Pete Walker was to the left in front of him ad-libbing and Ed would nod his head and kept on typing without stopping. I was on the right side in front of Ed and was ad-libbing the same as Pete was. Still Ed would nod his head and just kept on typing! When the story was finished he pulled it out and made two corrections and sent it to press!

The story was, if I remember right, "You don't pull on Superman's cape and you don't mess with the mayor's men."

Why the heart symbol is shaped like it is

WIn symbolism, the stylized heart we recognize today is the standard. It has been used ubiquitously in items as diverse as Martin Luther's personal seal in the late 1400s to Milton Glazer's famous 1976 logo: I (Heart) NY.

Follow your heart. Give your heart. Break a heart. In all these sentiments, one probably imagines that familiar symbol rounded at the shoulders and pointed at the end.

It wasn't always that way.

In the western world, for nearly 1,500 years, the physical heart was considered to be shaped more like a pinecone.

Carol Perkins: feeling weary and heavy laden without Judy

"Why wouldn't she want a celebration? Her life was a celebration. She understood what was important: God, family, friends, work, community, church, and we might even add The Democratic Party. (You have to know Judy to appreciate this.)"

By Carol Perkins
Previous Carol: Snow brings happy memories

Many of you may feel you know her because of the many times she has appeared in my articles. Almost every story in my life, she was one of the main characters. Last Monday, my friend, Judy Wallace Irvin, passed away after a three year battle with cancer, and with her passing, I feel "weary and heavy laden."

Very few days passed that we didn't talk or text. She lived in Edmonton until she married Mike Irvin and moved to Russell Springs, which might as well have been on the other side of the moon. Distance did not slow down our time together.
