Billly Joe Fudge writes:
W-e-l-l, I\'m no expert in the science of bird identification but, for me, lacking expertise has never been a very effective deterrent, so here goes! I believe this little "Bluebird" is an Indigo Bunting. If so, according to the Department of Avian Studies at Great Wooded South University, Indigo Bunting may be one of the most plentiful bird species in areas of the Eastern United States. --

Darryl Smith: Blue bird is actually Indigo Bunting

Kentucky is right in the center of their range

Darryl Smith writes:
Hi Ed. That's a male Indigo Bunting. They are small birds, about the size of a Goldfinch. The males are bright blue in the summer, but their plumage turns brown in the winter. The female is always brown. Oddly enough, almost every time I see one it's sitting on the road. They are seed eaters, but if they are visiting my feeders I'm missing them. Maybe they are just shy... The have a huge range, and Kentucky is right in the center of it. Darryl --Darryl Smith
