The Movies: When talkies came to Columbia's Rialto Theater

Jim recalls some great exhibitors who made the Rialto a great theater: R. L. Wethington, John Ritchie Walker, Clay Smith, Bunny Shively, Vernon Yarberry, Alfred Harper and F.X. Merkely

In the late summer of 1929, R.L. Wethington, who had managed the Rialto theater since its opening the year before, sold the operation to John Ritchie Walker and Clay Smith, those gentlemen taking over on the first day of September. Just over year later, Mr. Smith sold his interest to Bunny Shively, and the News reported that Messrs. Walker & Shively were "investigating talkie apparatus and may install such equipment in the near future." However, Mr. Shively's association with the entertainment industry soon ended, and by the time 1931 rolled around, Mr. Walker's partner was Vernon Yarberry.

Hardly had the new year taken its first full breath when the Rialto, then barely three years old, got a major make-over. The January 6 edition of the newspaper announced that Messrs. Walker & Yarberry had decided with certainty to drop coin on refitting their entertainment palace to show the newfangled talking photoplays.

She was a member of Pleasant Grove Separate Baptist Church. Rebecca was a housewife and a former employee of Lee's Famous Recipe. She enjoyed cooking, reading and caring for her family. She was the matriarch of a stalwart, close knit Casey County, KY family. She was a native of Casey County, KY, the daughter of the late Charlie & Mary Etta Campbell Hogue and the widow of John Lay. She leaves seven direct living descendants.

Nora Lee Minor, Taylor County, KY (1927-2017)

She was noteworthy business leader on the Campbellsville retail scene for many years as the owner and operator of Minor's Jeans. She professed faith in Christ and was a member of Acton Baptist Church. She was the daughter of the late Tom Edelen & Maude Murray Edelen, and the widow of Hanley Minor, her husband of over 48 years. She leaves 26 direct living descendants spanning four generations.

Marshall L. Bunch, 66, Chance, Adair Co., KY (1951-2017)

He was a member of the Union Chapel Church and a dedicated Sunday school teacher for 41 years. He sang with the Spirit Quartet for several years. He was a retired lumber grader for Kentucky Tie and Lumber and J. Downey & Son Lumber. He was a deputy jailer in Adair and Russell County jails. He was also an avid horseman. He was the patriarch of a large, highly regarded South Adair County, KY family. He was the son of the late Joseph Milton & Lilly Mae York Bunch. His wife, Suzzanne Lewis Bunch, survives. He leaves 23 direct living descendants.

Ellis Bishop, Cumberland Co., KY/Owsley Co. native (1926-2017)

He was an Alumni of the University of Kentucky. He began working for the University in 1952. In 1958 he was appointed as the Cumberland County Extension Agent and served the county until his retirement in 1990. He was a member and former deacon of Burkesville Baptist Church, a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, and was a longtime member of V.F.W. Post 5419. His wife, Jean Bishop, survives. He leaves two direct living descendants.
