COLUMBIA, KY - (Tue 12 Dec 2017) - The No. 9-ranked Lindsey Wilson men's basketball team defeated Boyce (KY) 100-43 Tuesday night at Biggers Sports Center as four Blue Raiders scored in double figures.

Lindsey Wilson was efficient from the floor as they shot 57.8 percent and managed to hit 15-of-29 three-point attempts. On the night, LWC was able to force 20 turnovers, including 14 steals as they outrebounded the Bulldogs 47-29.

She was a member of a respected Green County, KY, family, the daughter of the late Carlos Beckham & Zelpha Whitlock Clark, and the widow of Rupert Ray Bagby. The Blue Raiders (11-0) scored 76 points on their way to defeating Voorhees (SC) 76-51 at Biggers Sports Center on December 2, 2017. LWC shot 50.0 percent from the floor as four Blue Raiders scored in double digits.

She retired as a Coordinator of Scott County Middle Youth Service Center, was a member and former Secretary of First Christian Church Middlesboro, KY, Disciples of Christ. She attended Campbellsville College and was a graduate of the University of KY. She was a member of Beta Sigma Phi of Middlesboro. She was a former member of the Middlesboro Garden Club and the Middlesboro Hospital Ladies Auxiliary. She was a member of an outstanding Adair County, KY, family, the daughter of the late Earl Dennis & Christine Goff Cain. She leaves seven direct living descendants.

Honorary doctorates awarded to Garrison, Pike at LWC Winter Commencement

At ceremonies on Saturday, Lindsey Wilson College awarded an honorary doctorate to James J. Pike and posthumously, to local businessman and LWC trustee Robert Lewis Garrison, who passed away suddenly in November. 196 undergraduate degrees and 144 graduate degrees were awarded.

Members of the first half of the Lindsey Wilson College Class of 2017-18 were told Saturday morning to go forward with a "glass half-full" attitude because a positive perspective will shape the way they lead and adapt to change.

Those were the words 45-year automotive industry veteran and LWC trustee James J. Pike delivered at the college's 106th commencement ceremony, held Saturday morning in Biggers Sports Center.

Lindsey Wilson awarded 340 degrees at this year's winter commencement - 196 undergraduate degrees and 144 graduate degrees. The winter class also included LWC's first graduates from the Master of Business Administration (MBA) program.

APRIL POLSTON: Casey Countian beats big odds to succeed

Already struggling financially, her world turned upside down when she was widowed with two young sons, in August 2016, when her husband, Douglas Wayne Polston, lost his life in an traffic accident. But she persevered in a male-dominated career path at Somerset Community College, in the Industrial Maintenance Technology program, and is now nearing graduation, ready for a field which boasts $50,000 - $70,000 starting pay, annually.

SOMERSET, KY - Casey County native April Polston could never have imagined the year she turned 30 would also be the year she would become a widow and find herself the sole provider for her two boys.

Polston, now 31, said although last year was difficult, giving up never crossed her mind. Instead, she pushed ahead in her college coursework and became more determined than ever to succeed.

J. C. (Curley) Giles, Taylor Co., KY/Adair native (1930-2017)

He professed faith in Christ and was of the Church of God faith. He was a retired employee of Tennessee Gas Transmissions and a former employee of the City Maintenance Garage. In his younger years he enjoyed playing baseball but nothing compared to playing croquet. J.C. was such a craftsman and perfectionists that he would hand make the wooden mallets and balls. He went on to become the KY Croquet Association State Clay singles Champion on several occasions. He was the son of the late Clarance & Elizabeth Richardson Giles. His wife of over 70 years, Clodean Campbell Giles, survives. He was the patriarch of a close knit and honored family. He leaves 11 direct, and five step living descendants.
