By Robert Cumming

Monday eclipse morning bright and early around 7 my wife Laura and I loaded up and headed south via US 127 to TN 111. Cookeville was right on the eclipse band with a maximum 2 minutes 33 seconds totality exposure.

With no traffic we arrived around 9AM and headed to the west side of town and the wonderful public Cane Creek Sports Complex for viewing. It was a beautiful blue sky morning without a cloud in the sky. The local Cookeville newspaper crew made their rounds among the crowd gathered and interviewed us.

Suddenly out of nowhere about 11AM clouds began to move in from the east

Liberty viewer listens to voice in a dream . . . and goes to Cookeville, TN

By Rita King

Had a dream last night, remember being told to go see the eclipse at 100%. A voice said, "You're this close...GO!!" I live in Liberty.

I listened, roused up my sister this morning and we set out to Cookeville, TN.

Traffic was fine, no problems. Found a nice spot in Zaxby's parking lot along with some friendly Somerset eclipse viewers and Zaxby's staff.

Mike Watson: Reckoning time via the Eclipse

This event, the eclipse of later today, might be a time to reflect on why and how we remember what we do...and if we do. - Mike
Click on headline for complete column

By Mike Watson

The reckoning of time and placement of events in proper order is often a daunting task. As an historian, a dumpster-diver for history, one might say, I have found the memory to be quite fragile. We often remember an event in vivid detail, but the sequence leaves us lacking.

With the near-total eclipse (for many of us) coming around noon today, and not having this close proximity, at least here at home, again in our lifetimes, we shall remember this one for many years. We shall likely reckon some events by this occurrence. By that I mean, it will be of such significance to use that we will remember other events in relation to the eclipse.

Letter: Sad Columbia isn't getting new companies

Rita Smith writes:
Ed, just reading about all these new companies locating in Monticello, and now in Campbellsville, I am sad that Columbia, can't heve anything or do not want anything. Can someone such as our leaders please give the citizens an explanation as to why this keeps going on? Just the truth is all we want.

Sincerlely,
- Rita Smith

FRANKFORT, KY (17 Aug 2017) - On Wednesday, August 23, 2017, more office furnishings from the now empty Capital Plaza Tower building will be sold through a second spot bid sale, to be held at 500 Mero Street, Frankfort, KY. Bidding will begin at 7amCT/8amET, and conclude at 12pmNoonCT/1pmET.

Last year state agencies moved out of the 24-story office building and the Commonwealth has deemed a huge amount of office furniture and personal property items to be surplus. Solar Eclipse safety information from National Weather Service

Click on headline for complete story with embedded NASA/Goddard Pinhole Projection with Cereal Box Video

Safety information courtesy of NASA

Looking directly at the Sun is unsafe except during the brief total phase of a solar eclipse (totality), when the Moon entirely blocks the Sun's bright face, which will happen only within the narrow path of totality.

The only safe way to look directly at the uneclipsed or partially eclipsed Sun is through special-purpose solar filters, such as eclipse glasses or hand-held solar viewers. Homemade filters or ordinary sunglasses, even very dark ones, are not safe for looking at the Sun. To date four manufacturers have certified that their eclipse glasses and handheld solar viewers meet the ISO 12312-2 international standard for such products: Rainbow Symphony, American Paper Optics, Thousand Oaks Optical, and TSE 17.
