Master scrimshaw artist Jay Rose will return to HGR Fall Festival

Master scrimshaw artist Jay Rose is one of many artists and crafters who will be back this year for the Homeplace on Green River Fall Heritage Festival September 9. Scrimshaw originated on sailing ships when the crew carved whale bone to help with the boredom of long days at sea. Rose uses deer antler for the jewelry, cane heads and other novelties he carves. - George Kolbenschlag

There will be more events, activities and vendors at this year's Homeplace on Green River Fall Heritage Festival than ever before. The festival, with events starting at 9amCT/10amET, and end at 4pmCT/5pmET, September 9, 2017, at HGR, 1765 New Columbia Road, Campbellsville, KY, will again feature hay, mule and oxen wagon rides, a barrel train, colonial reenactors, petting farm, raptor exhibit featuring Allegiant the Bald Eagle, food, arts and crafts vendors and more.

Robert L. Bertram, Russell Co., KY (1940-2017)

He was the patriarch of a distinguished South Central Kentucky family. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, and grandfather. His wife of 54 years, Glenna Bernard Bertram, survives. He leaves 18 direct living descendants.

Phillip Wayne York, 66, Bryan, Russell Co., KY (1951-2017)

He was a farmer. He was a native of Bryan, Russell County, KY, and a resident of the community at the time of his death. He was a member of a respected Russell County family. He was the son of Edna Hill York, who survives, and the late Samuel York. He leaves one direct living descendant, a daughter, Tracy York, of Columbia, KY.

The City of Columbia gas rates, which have not been changed in over a dozen years, received most of the attention at Monday night's regular council meeting, August 7, 2017. Mayor Curtis Hardwick and the Gas Department's Anne-Marie Austin presented proposed Ordinance No. 610.71, changing verbiage for customer billing and adding a rate increase.

People poured into Columbia for what's now recognized as the largest one day show of its king, and mentioned as a 'Mini' National Show

News from the South Central KY Outdoor Expo

The South Central Ky Outdoor Expo just concluded its eight annual show here in Columbia this past Saturday at the Adair County School Campus. Now recognized as the largest one day show of its kind anywhere the Expo has continued to expand and broaden its horizon from it's inception back in 2010.

The event brings people from far and near to visit a huge trade show packed with an assortment of outdoor gear and other items of interest to the entire family. Special guests included Keynote speaker Hank Parker a legend in the outdoor world and often referred to as the rod and reel answer to basketball's Michael Jordan in popularity and talent. Outdoor Icon Harold Knight of Knight and Hale Game Calls was on hand visiting with attendees and assisted in Judging the State Championship Duck calling Competition.

CU breaks ground for second Conover Education Center building

Harrodsburg, KY - To accommodate the growing student population at its Conover Education Center in Harrodsburg, Campbellsville University is adding a new 4,500-square-foot building. The groundbreaking ceremony for this building took place recently.

The Conover Education Center offers undergraduate and graduate programs in general education, Christian studies and business administration as well as cosmetology and allied health certificate programs. The new building will include more classroom space, offices and a multipurpose chapel.
