Happy ending: Little lost Pomeranian is home

We hoped the little lost Pomeranian dog would be quickly claimed and that's exactly what happened in less than two hours of the time the photo was posted on Columbiamagazine.com! The little dog had gotten away from its home on Wall Street and was unable to get back -- it would have had to cross the busy Greensburg Street. Danny Pierce called in the request for help. The owners picked him up and all is well again.

New Adair Workforce Grant application will not fund building

For now, plans for a $6 million plus Adult Learning/Career Center/Administration Building is defunct. Adair County's new Workforce Initiative is for $265,000 for Healthcare training with the hub being in Columbia, also serving Casey & Russell. The Russell County application, with a hub for Advance Manufacturing and IT service for the three counties, is for $6,442,646. The Casey County hub for Diesel Mechanics, Transportation & Logistics, is seeking $2,957,217. The applications are among 41 asking for a total of more than $165 million, with approximately $34.5 million available to yet be distributed.

By Ed Waggener

Dr. Pam Stephens, interim Adair County Superintendent took some time to clarify the Adair County School District's new Workforce Development Grant application in the "Hub & Spokes" centers for Adair, Casey, and Russell Counties.

Adair County County's application is for $265,356, which is much lower than the application which made the second round of funding last year, which would have included a new $6 million plus center which would have also included a new administration building, a center for adult education, and a workforce emphasis on Industrial Maintenance. That plan, Dr. Stephens said, is now essentially defunct.

Free Soil Testing Program ends March 31, 2017

By Teresa Bright

The free soil testing program sponsored by the Adair County Soil Conservation District ends on March 31, 2017. Landowners in Adair County are eligible to receive 8 free soil tests for crops, pastures, lawns and/or gardens. When taking soil samples, remember that the results of a soil test are only as good as the sample itself. Samples should be taken at a depth of 3-4 inches for no-till production and 6-8 inches when the ground is to be tilled. Take at least 10 cores samples from smaller fields to compile one sample for the field. Larger fields may require as many as 30 core samples per field. Try to limit soil samples to 20 acres or less when possible. Avoid pulling core samples from drains, near roadways, around feeding areas, and where manure has been applied within the last month. The core samples should be placed into a plastic bucket or paper bag, mixed well, and allowed to air dry. If you have any questions about how to take a correct soil sample, contact the Adair County Extension Office, 409 Fairground Street, Columbia, KY, at 270-384-2317. - Teresa Bright
