Lewis and Clark Bridge, East End Crossing Open to Traffic

The long-anticipated 8.5 miles of new roadway connects the eastern edge of suburban Louisville and an area just east of Jeffersonville, Ind. with its centerpiece 2,500-foot cable-stay bridge reaching across the Ohio River.

The East End Crossing opens to traffic Sunday, December 18, following an earlier opening ceremony, marking completion of the $2.3 billion Louisville-Southern Indiana Ohio River Bridges project.

Indiana Lt. Governor and Governor-elect Eric Holcomb announced the newly named Lewis and Clark Bridge by executive order of Vice President-elect Governor Mike Pence at a ribbon-cutting ceremony on the Indiana approach of the new bridge.

Following the ribbon cutting, Holcomb and other speakers were loaded into two Ford vehicles built at the nearby Kentucky Truck Plant in East Louisville to ceremonially cross the bridge for the first time. Project officials followed state leaders in Transit Authority of River City buses.

Billy Joe Fudge: Bigger culvert, new bridge may be necessary

To solve problem of more frequent flooding on Jamestown Street
Comments re photo 70244 Culvert fails in Town Creek flash flooding more often now
Click on headline for complete commentary

By Billy Joe Fudge

Recent news in higher elevations of Columbia provides conclusively strong evidence pointing to the "why" of the increased rate of flooding on Town Creek.

- A. - Healthy forests are the most efficient and effective environmental ecosystems at rain water absorption and slow-release retention. Many raindrops are broken up into smaller droplets by leaves, twigs, limbs, stems and woody ground cover beneath the canopy before they even reach the forest floor. After they reach the forest floor they are absorbed by the inches of organic matter on the forest floor before reaching the forest soils beneath. Forest soils are healthy, heavily organic ecosystems in and of themselves and a square foot of the top few of inches of soil has dozens of creepy crawlers that are processing the rotting organic material and creating a fluffy, healthy sponge-like soil in the process. In addition a tablespoon of this same forest soil has billions of good microorganisms which are preparing the minerals and nutrients for quick absorption by the tree and other plant roots.

Robert Ellis: Red Barn Album: Beauty on a near wintrish weekend

Click on headline for three-photo album

Robert Ellis sent another delightful set of photos from his stomping ground in the Coburg environs They are linked together in this album for easier viewing.

This set includes a CM Classic Photo of a Red Barn Scene on Caney Fork Creek, a photo featuring a fern with a natural background which is pure art, and an eerily beautiful tribute to the passing of an animal life, which has a bit of Christmas connotation where it whimsically entitle, "Requuiem for a (rein)deer," but he has a better caption, "A Buck's Final Resting Place..."

Comments are welcome, and there's one photo with a vining plant we like readers to help identify. - EW
