KY Afield Outdoors: Landowners honored for improving habitat

Campbellsville University's Clay Hill Memorial Forest and Jeffrey Kartheiser of Barren County among the honorees.

Frankfort, KY - As it works to conserve and enhance fish and wildlife resources across the state, the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources doesn't do it alone.

Private landowners, businesses and other groups are key players.

"They are critical to us being able to manage the state's resources," said Dan Figert, assistant wildlife division director for Kentucky Fish and Wildlife. "We see them as vital partners."

The Habitat Improvement Program aims to improve wildlife habitat across Kentucky. Administered by Kentucky Fish and Wildlife since its inception in the late 1980s, the program helps landowners and groups develop management plans on properties of 25 acres or more. Technical support and some financial assistance also are available through the program.

Each fall, the department recognizes a handful of these conservation heroes. Landowners from five regions, two business conservation partners and a conservationist of the year were honored Dec. 1 at the Salato Wildlife Education Center.

Those receiving awards for 2016 were:

V. Kolbenschlag adds to Dave Rosenbaum critique

Vonnie Kolbenschlag writes:
And . . .besides credit to author Dr. Young, credit goes to Dan Trabue who wrote a journal of his early life to pass along to his grandson. Young, a history professor, found the original journal which he copied and added foot notes which gave background to the historical events Trabue experienced. The full title of his book is "Westward into Kentucky: the Narrative of Daniel Trabue." It was first published as a book in 1981.

Messiah-Sing! a reason why Columbia is permanent anchorage

Variety of artistic talent was incredible at last night's "Messiah-Sing!" performed at the Columbia Baptist Church, Dr. Kolbenschlag says, adding that cultural events like this one are example of why he's made Columbia his permanent anchorage, and concludes, " . . . this magnificent concert is one of many cultural events that are now a tradition in Adair County. In the past couple of weeks, in addition to last evening's concert, Adair Countians have heard and watched the Lindsey Wilson Concert Band under the direction of our own band leader extraordinary, Tim Allen, and several stage performances by the Lindsey Wilson theater students under the direction of Robert Brock. Add this to the many Christmas activities of our local churches and I believe we can match our county's cultural environment to any rural county in the state," and he urges those who did not attend take advantage of these opportunities.
Next opportunity is tonight to attend Messiah-Sing, free community performance by the LWC Choral Ensembles, Campbellsville University Chorale with musical accompaniment by the Commonwealth Musicians of Louisville, (KY), at Campbellsville First United Methodist Church, 317 E Main Street, Campbellsville, KY. - Venus Popplewell

By Dr. George Kolbenschlag

From the seven clear, pleasant voices that opened the show sounding like dingy-ding bells to the closing rendition of the always inspiring Hallelujah Chorus, the performance of the Lindsey Wilson Singers, the college's concert Choir and the Commonwealth Musicians last evening was over the fence and out of the park. Another example of why Columbia is my choice for permanent anchorage.

Dave Rosenbaum: Quick review, Westward into Kentucky

Enjoyed Adair Countian Chester Raymond Young's book

Dave Rosenbaum writes:
Just read Westward Into Kentucky edited by Chester Raymond Young. Very familiar names were there when Columbia was formed: Walker, Caldwell, Haskins, Antle, Waggener, Conover, Burbridge, Montgomery and so many others. I had not read it before and enjoyed it very much. - Dave Rosenbaum

Thanks: Mr. Young was a hero for those of us who thought writing a book was about as significant an accomplishment as there could be. Before he edited "Westward Into Kentucky," and after, he would most often attend the Columbia Baptist Church when he was in town, and was always recognized from the pulpit and sometimes spoke himself. Thanks for the reminder. Don't know genealogy very well, and wonder if Chester Young would be a kinsman of another favorite author, Garnett Young, who wrote "The Briar Domain."- EW
