New Heartland Parkway between Columbia & Campbellsville

Appreciates highly visible yellow lines, side white lines. Urges all to keep it clean, pristine.

Kathy Jones writes:

I just returned from Campbellsville and boy, was I pleased with the road! The surface is so smooth, the yellow lines are quite visible and the white line on the side of the roads are clear. (I know a woman must have suggested this line. It is SO helpful when one is driving at night to see the side of the pavement. HAHA on the woman reference.) Any way, as I was driving I noticed a large pile of trash on the side of the road. Can't we be proud of what we have and not trash it up?

When I can't believe, what I see . . .

By Tommy Melson

When I can't believe, what I see... And the words I hear, are only meant to deceive . . . I shut my eyes, open my heart, and feel for the sound . . . Of hope and compassion, the only thing that will save us, from the coming down... Because when your decisions are made with hate and fear . . . it makes the suffering more, and the future unclear . . .

Remembers going to baseball games at fairgrounds

About 65 years ago, ca 1951

Phillip Burris writes:
I remember when my dad Arvin Burris played on a team at the fairgrounds, I think it was Garlin. I was about 4 or 5 years old, so it would have been about 65 years ago. I always liked him taking me to the games because of the play area that I got to enjoy afterwards. Hate to see the fairgrounds go; lots of memories. - Phillip Burris

Michael Morris favorite flower: The Maypop

The sight of "the prettiest and most complex flower" he'd ever seen, on Fern Valley Road, Jefferson County, KY, reminded Mike Morris of other Maypops on Jones Chapel Road in Adair County, KY.

Michael Morris called from Okalona recently to give strict instructions to head for Jones Chapel Ridge in time to catch the Maypop season.

He had just been riding his bike on Fern Valley Road and had spotted the exotic flower blooming along the the roadside and remembered often seeing others in a fencerow on Jones Chapel Road.

"It's the prettiest and most complex flower I've ever seen," he said.

Wendy Burt Identifies Robert Ellis photo as Mist Flower

Mystery plant no longer a mystery
Wendy Butler Burt writes:
This lovely and abundant flower is Mist Flower (Eupatorium coelestinum), also called Wild or Hardy Ageratum because it resembles the annual garden plant. It is found in moist woods, wet meadows, and other low areas. The species name "coelestinum" means heavenly--in reference to the color of its flowers. --Wendy Butler Burt

JIM: Digest of Adair County News of September 6, 1916

Several news letters graced the pages of the September 6, 1916 News to give a good cross section of the every day late summer goings-on in rural Adair County.
Click on headline for complete digest

Compiled by JIM

From the upper reaches of the county the Neatsburg correspondent reported that Miss Lida Grant was somewhat better after a serious bout with typhoid fever. Otherwise, "some good work" had been done on the road in that section; Revs. Z.T. Williams and W.G. Montgomery planned to open a protracted meeting at Tabernacle on Wednesday, September 6th; and Neatsburgian Logan Grant and Miss Reda Chatman (Reeda Chapman) of the Garlin section had eloped "last Thursday" to Jeffersonville, Indiana. (As was common in that era, the Newsletter was delayed several days, as Miss Chapman and Mr. Grant were married on Friday, August 25th. He was almost 24; she was a bit past 17. Their marriage lasted until her passing, just short of their 63rd anniversary.)

In Sparksville, tobacco looked better than it had in years and the more industrious farmers already were applying knife to stalk and others were turning their wheat grounds. Elroy Rowe was down with consumption, and in a local baseball game, Bird Schoolhouse had eked out a 12-11 victory over Wilson. Cooksey & Reed had recently passed through Sparksville with their wheat thresher, everyone who attended the Friday night apple peeling at James Reece's reported a good time, and everyone was pleased with the successful school in the Wilson district being taught by Mr. George Aaron (grandfather of Dr. Phil Aaron).

COLUMBIA, KY - Thomas (GA) made the most of its chances Sunday night in a 4-1 win over the No. 23-ranked Lindsey Wilson men's soccer team at Walter S. Reuling Stadium.

In 50s, 60s, Fairgrounds was the only field to play baseball

JCJohnson writes:
Back in the 50s and 60s as far as I recall the fairgrounds was the only field that we had to play baseball. We played our little league, our high school baseball at that rock pile, if you hit a ball into the oak trees it was a double not a home run. The only way you could get a home run was to run very fast around the bases, if it didn\'t hit a limb in the oak trees. PS. sliding into a base was a hide skinner Ha. --JCJohnson
