Reasons why Columbia may not qualify for Vibrant Cities

Comments re article 84170 Kentucky Arts Council launches new version of its website

Vonnie Kolbenschlag
Reasons Why
Columbia may not qualify

Along one side of the Public Square
Is an unsightly ditch
Debris and dirt collects there
And cigarette butts are given a pitch.

Over the ditch is shabby wood
As a way to cross.
But these certainly don't look good
And as to safely, I'd score them a loss.

Some cities cover ditches with metal grates
That serve quite well
Allowing drainage. That illustrates
A city's awareness that upkeep can excel.

There are old cement light bases
Flecked with yellow paint
On the Square in five places,
No longer useful and beautiful they ain't.

The Garden Club workers promote
Columbia Square attractions.
The Art Council might give Columbia a vote If it weren't for the ugly (and solvable) distractions.

Annex Basement will be open until all clear tonight

Update: Only doors facing Public Square at front of Annex are open. Holly Grimsley called to remind everyone that the Greensburg Street side doors at the front of the Annex had to be locked because winds were blowing them open and letting rainwater get on the floor. The shelter will be open, she said, until the tornado watch is over - expected to be at around 10:30pmCT, tonight, Sunday, July 3, 2016.

Mike Keltner, Adair County Emergency Disaster Director wrote that the basement in the Adair Annex would be open during storms for anyone needing shelter.

Deputy Adair County Judge Holly Grimsley is on her way, she called to say at 3:52pmCT that she was on her way to open the shelter, and if anyone arrives and does not find it open now, just wait a few moments - she is on her way.

The Deputy CJE said that the shelter will be open this even until there is an all clear.

Sunrise clouds 1 Jul 2016 inspired him to stop for pictures

Robert Cumming writes:
There certainly was something inspiring viewing local cloud formations the first Saturday morning in July. I was driving east on KY 206 just north of the 76 intersection at 8AM when I saw such unusual intertwined cirrus-cumulonimbus cloud formations that I stopped in the middle of my lane (no traffic) to snap 4 cell phone pics! Unfortunately the resulting I-phone camera images didn't quite measure up to the reality of my mind's eye view! --Robert Cumming

RRW Comment on: Joyce Coomer on kids

Writer thinks work in a public place should be a requirement before graduation from high school
Basic math: Children need to learn to count. Period
By Ralph Waggener

Joyce makes a good point about kids working; they yet have not learned how to work.

When young people go to work at McDonalds or other fast food places they have to learn how to work!

Adair County Fair Factoid VII: Record numbers in 1902

Homecoming Centennial of Adair County in 1902 brought record number to Fair
2016 Adair Co. Fair Schedule of Events
Next earlier AC Fair Factoid: Adair County Fair Factoid VI - Horseless carriage at 1901 Fair

By Mike Watson, Adair County Historian

The Adair County Fair of 1902 was a record breaking event. This was the centennial year for Adair County and was designated the "Homecoming" to Adair. Thousands of former citizens flocked from various states and events were planned across the town to celebrate the birth of the county and the welcoming home of those who had gone to seek their fortunes.

JIM: 100 years ago this week

Exciting times, back then, with changes in the Columbia Fair management, work on the Stanford Pike, a new bakery, home construction underway, a huge furniture store opened, but there was frustration over the foot-dragging on the railroad to Columbia (a good cause today for a determined activist). An Esto resident moved to Columbia to aid men with automotive woes. Mr. Paul H. Hughes joined the classified advertising staff of the St. Louis Star. And Adair County lost a member of a the last of one of Adair County's first families. And young Clarance Jackman, spared in the War with Mexico, had his life cut short in World War II.

The front page of the July 5, 1916 Adair County News had a potpourri of articles and insightful information for the casual and careful reader alike.

The Columbia Fair was under new management

The Columbia Fair, scheduled to open on August 22nd (later changed to August 15th) was under new management. Former Fair Association members R.F. Paull, J.B. Coffey, R.L. Smythe, and C.S. Harris were out. Mr. R.K. Young had just purchased Mr. Paull's one-fifth interest and of latter-named gentleman, the News remarked, "[He] joins the merrimaking with all his vim and enthusiasm and will prove a good man to the Association and to the public as well."

Basic math: Children need to learn to count. Period

By Joyce Coomer

In addition to children learning to count money, they also need to learn to count, period.

We ordered a several piece box of food yesterday, with three additional pieces. We were charged for the three additional pieces but when we got home, discovered that not only were the three additional pieces of food NOT in the box, we were also one short of the number of pieces of food that were stated on the menu.

In addition to learning to count, children (and most adults) need to learn to pay attention to what they're doing . . . not playing with their phones nor having frivolous conversations instead of paying attention to their work.

Memories of 4th of July's Past by Chuck Hinman

Even in dust bowl days of the 1930's, Chuck Hinman's very practical mother recognized the importance of a little foolish spending on the Fourth of July. A reprint of Chuck Hinman IJMA No. 315. First posted in 2009 on ColumbiaMagazine.com Chuck Hinman Obituary: Charles Ray "Chuck" Hinman (1922-2011) in the Bartlesville, OK Examiner-Enterprise)

By Chuck Hinman

Growing up on a farm in Nebraska in the dust-bowl days of the "30s" meant we had little money to spend on foolishness such as fireworks. Even so, Mom recognized the importance to kids of a little foolish spending on occasions such as the 4th of July.

Remembering Bobbie Grider: A tribute so fitting for July 4th

The inspiring story of a Russell Springs, KY World War II Veteran: 'Bobbie was a quiet man, solid as a rock and ever dependable, a man of faith, integrity, and gentle humor. He's home now, reunited with his beloved Alene."
Bobbie Grider, 91, Russell Co., KY (1925-2016)

From one who knew his life well

Bobbie Grider enlisted in the US Army in the summer of 1943, a few weeks past his 19th birthday and just days before the beginning of what would have been his senior year at Russell Springs High School. Proclaim Liberty throughout all the land

People these days are familiar with many passages from the Old Testament books of Genesis and Exodus, but few 21st century Christians hear much about the book that comes next, Leviticus. Though it contains a scant few narrative stories, Leviticus primarily relates the detailed practices to be overseen by the Levites -- members of the tribe of Levi -- and the priests of the ancient Hebrews. To say that this section of Old Testament law is detailed is a major understatement. The book describes a holiness code, a religious reaction or practice in reply to nearly every conceivable aspect of ancient life.
