Robert Cumming: Gov. Bevin takes right step on Dual Credit

Writer offered Governor some solicited advice: Ease up on the Beshears, cut them some slack

Robert C Cumming writes:
This dual credit program is a big step in the right direction of making the high cost of secondary education more accessible to more area students. This especially in the wake of recent state funded college budget cutbacks meaning fewer teaching staff and classes available now. It is also good to see newly elected Governor Bevin in our area at least so he can get to know, and be more familiar with our area. I did offer him a bit of unsolicited advice in my opinion after meeting with him at the meeting today to perhaps ease up on the Beshears and cut them some slack since Steve is not running for or from anything and Andy after all is the chief law enforcement officer in the state! --Robert C Cumming

Discussion begins on hops production in Kentucky

During Craft Beer Week, Commissioner Quarles initiates talks on hops research. Craft brewing is one of state's fast growing industries. Hops production was widespread in Kentucky, particularly northern Kentucky, until the early 20th century. Prohibition in the 1920s accelerated the decline of hops production in Kentucky

"The number of craft breweries in Kentucky has grown more than 600 percent just in the past five years, and that has created a market for Kentucky-grown hops," Commissioner Quarles said. "It's important that we work with our universities on research to establish the best production methods for potential emerging crops such as hops."
