John C. Sandlin, 82, Adair Co., KY (1934-2016)

He was retired from Naval Ordinance and was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War. He was a native of Perry County, KY, and a resident of Adair County, KY, at the time of his death. He was the son of the late John & Minta Baker Sandlin. His wife, Rosetta Abner Sandlin, survives. He was the patriarch of a large, distinguished family. He leaves 19 direct living descendants, a God daughter and honorary grndchild to carry on his legacy.

Funeral services for John C. Sandlin will be Wednesday, April 20, 2016 at 11amCT, at Stotts-Phelps-McQueary Funeral Home, 210 Greensburg Street, Columbia, KY, with Rev. Darrell Treece the officiating clergy. Interment will be in Haven Hill Cemetery, 1276 Liberty Road, Columbia, KY. Visitation will be from 4pm to 8pmCT, Tuesday, April 19, 2016, and & on Wednesday morning before the funeral service.

Thelma Mae Spoon, 93, Adair County, KY (1923-2016)

She was a member of Hadley's Community Church and had worked at Circle Restaurant & Jim Dandy Restaurant. She will be remembered for her warm smile, gracious, friendly manner. She was the daughter of the late Gilbert and Bertha Stotts Smith and the widow of Garvin Spoon. She was the matriarch of a large, highly regarded South Adair County, KY family. She leaves 46 direct living descendants.

A Celebration of her life will be held Tuesday, April 19, 2016 at 11amCT, at Stotts-Phelps-McQueary Funeral Home, 210 Greensburg Street, Columbia, KY, with Rev. Elbert Hadley the officiating clergy. Interment will be in Haven Hill Cemetery, 1276 Liberty Road, Columbia, KY. Visitation will be after 3pmCT, Monday, April 18, 2016.

Josephine Rae Fields, 80, Edmonton, KY (1935-2016)

She was a homemaker and member of the Grace Union Baptist Church. She was the daughter of the late Riley and Mae Walbert Gibson. Her husband, Herbert Fields, survives. She leaves two direct and three step living descendants.

Maria Creekmore, 51, Casey County, KY (1964-2016)

She was a housewife and a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. She was a native of the Philippines and a resident of Liberty, KY, at the time of her death. She was the daughter of the Cristina Gerna Tyand the late Gervacio Ty. Her husband over 28 years, John Creekmore, survives.

The News practically had to use smaller typeset to fit all the important items on the front page of the April 19, 1916 edition.

Front and center stood transportation, a topic near and dear to editor C.S. Harris. In this piece, more commentary than news, the nay-sayers of work on the Stanford Road drew considerable heat. That was the first stretch selected for improvement in Adair County under the state Good Roads act, and some folks were grumbling that not more than a mile or two would ever be built.

Samuel Kessler is going to have a busy summer.

Kessler, a sophomore at Campbellsville High School, has been accepted to participate in the Kentucky Governor's School for the Arts.

The honor is in addition to him being accepted to attend Gatton Academy for his last two years of his high school career and the Rogers Scholars program this summer.

Cumberland Falls conference building no longer available for use

FRANKFORT, KY -- The Blair Building adjacent to the Cumberland Falls State Resort Lodge, 7351 KY-90, Corbin, KY, is no longer available for use due to the deterioration of wooden beams that support its roof. The Blair Building was being used for meeting space and convention space.
