Less than an hour left in historic wet/dry voting

There's less than an hour left until polls close on the historic wet/dry vote for Adair County. A reminder -- if you're in line when the polls close, you'll get to vote.

If early-day projections are correct, there could be as many as seven or eight thousand votes to tally. We'll post vote totals as quickly as we can as counts come in from Adair County Precincts.

Big Al Owens visits Waylon Jennings' hometown in Texas

The big rig trucker/storyteller Big Al Owens frequently shares stories from the road. This one was written about a stop at the home of famous singer, songwriter Waylor Jennings (1937-2002) where James and Helen Jennings keep the legend alive.

By Allen (Big Al) Owens

I had the pleasure of chatting with James Jennings, brother of country music outlaw and legend Waylon Jennings in their hometown of Littlefield, Texas.

Littlefield is a very small community in northwestern Texas, located about 25 miles from Lubbock. Buddy Holly started his band there and a young Waylon was his bass player. As fate would have it he gave up his ride and the world was spared from losing Waylon the day the music died -- when Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and the Big Bopper J.P. Richardson died in a plane crash in that Iowa cornfield.

I was enthralled sharing stories, and listening to James and his first wife Helen. They have been married for almost 50 years, but he still refers to her as his 1st wife.

Sad news of death of Austin Bryant, 14, former ACHS student

By Alan W. Reed

It is with great sadness that we have learned of the death of Austin Bryant, one of our former students. The unfortunate incident occurred in southern Adair County yesterday.

Although Austin left our district around Christmas break to enroll in Green County Schools (and later Metcalfe County Schools), he still maintained many ties in the form of friends, relatives and former faculty members. Austin was also a former member of the Adair County Marching Band.

Grief counselors will be available today on our campus.

Austin will always be a member of our school family and I ask that all of you join me in supporting his family during this difficult time. - Alan W. Reed, Superintendent, Adair County Schools
