Letter: Raise taxes to make up for lost alcohol sales Tommy Jones writes: I think the county should raise property taxes about 10% and put a 3% food tax on restaurants and groceries, to make up for alcohol tax. Then the church people would be happy, they get more money without alcohol. Pretty simple, people on welfare and also tourists would all pay the food taxes, prayers answered. - Tommy Jones 2016-03-03 18:26:03 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Letters and Reader Feedback

Former Camp Casey Kids return to lead lesson By Dana Harmon, 21st CCLC Director On Wednesday, Adair County High School Project ACCEL students, Sydney Waggener and Jaiden Taylor came to the Camp Casey afterschool program at Adair County Primary Center (158 Col. Casey Dr., Columbia) to teach a science lesson that went along with our weeklong celebration of Dr. Suess' Birthday. The two former Camp Casey kids taught students in Rocket Science how to make Oobleck, a magical mixture of cornstarch, water and food coloring. This program director likes to think that their participation in Camp Casey a "few" years ago helped to contribute to their leadership and service skills. Brandon Burns: Why not Wet/Dry at regular election? Brandon Burns writes: If a benefit of alcohol sales is tax revenue, why wasn't the petitions started later and/or turned in at a time that would allow the wet/dry vote to be put on a ballot such as a primary. $15,000 for a special election seems like it would be considered to be an addition to an upcoming ballot. Special elections are widely known to be costly and have a lower voter turnout in comparison. The Republican caucus will still take place even though Rand Paul has dropped out of the race for President of the United States, and now has the opportunity to be a factor in the ultimate decision of who is nominated, since it will be in March instead of May. Given the two party system in America, this is the time where Republicans and Democrats debate about who will ultimately win the nomination and represent their respective parties in November's general election. To narrow these candidates down, a series of elections take place across the country in each state, usually called primaries, or caucuses.
