Vicky Pike: Wonders about Fiscal Court & new tax

'I have asked a few questions and from what I gather it is an insurance tax.' - VICKY PIKE

Victoria Pike writes:
I am wondering what this local government tax mentioned in the Fiscal Court agenda for Tuesday night is all about. I have asked a few questions and from what I gather it is an insurance tax. I know the city has taxes on insurance in the city. Is this what is being proposed here? Would like more info on what is to be discussed on taxing county insurance policies. Any info on this topic would be greatly appreciated. Doesn't seem there is much out there yet. Inquiring minds would like to know. Thanks - Victoria Pike

Letter: Raise taxes to make up for lost alcohol sales

Tommy Jones writes:
I think the county should raise property taxes about 10% and put a 3% food tax on restaurants and groceries, to make up for alcohol tax. Then the church people would be happy, they get more money without alcohol. Pretty simple, people on welfare and also tourists would all pay the food taxes, prayers answered. - Tommy Jones

Life at Miss Vicky's Pampered Angus Ranch: 1st Spring Baby

It's been too exciting a day for our heroine. First, her newest arrival, the first of this spring, charged her in the hallway. After settling that infantile episode, a neighbors calf had to be physically moved to her momma. Tonight, she says, 'Now I am one tired farmer and Miss Kitty has no supper cooked.

The answer to Mr. Burns' question is quite straightforward. By state statute, a wet-dry election in Kentucky can't be held on or within thirty days either side of a primary or general election. Please note point 3, below, from the KRS (Kentucky Revised Stautues):

Just my Taft Neal view: The alcohol witch hunt

By Taft Neal
Personal Commentary

I read article after article on the pros and cons of legal sale of spirits in the area, I in my own personal opinion have realize that history has started to repeat itself.

Long ago Christians of a small community that was as faith based as our own, conducted witch hunts based on their long standing traditions.

It is happening again.

It's nonsense to say self control is an exception

Personal commentary

Laura Hurt writes:
Beer is already here. It's just not sold legally. Legal or illegal is not going to make a difference about amounts alcohol being consumed; it's only going to make a difference for where it is sold and who is getting the profits from that.

Furthermore it is nonsense to say that self control is an exception. Yes, there are people abusing it (and make no mistake, they're already here abusing it, legal or not), but the vast majority just likes to drink an alcoholic beverage now and then and are not abusing it in any way. --Laura Hurt

Former Camp Casey Kids return to lead lesson

By Dana Harmon, 21st CCLC Director

On Wednesday, Adair County High School Project ACCEL students, Sydney Waggener and Jaiden Taylor came to the Camp Casey afterschool program at Adair County Primary Center (158 Col. Casey Dr., Columbia) to teach a science lesson that went along with our weeklong celebration of Dr. Suess' Birthday.

The two former Camp Casey kids taught students in Rocket Science how to make Oobleck, a magical mixture of cornstarch, water and food coloring.

This program director likes to think that their participation in Camp Casey a "few" years ago helped to contribute to their leadership and service skills. It was great to see these students giving back to our program! Thanks to Candice Flatt, Gifted/Talented Coordinator for scheduling students with us.

Shannon Sexton: It's going to be hard to find dry county move to

Commentary (in all good humor
See also: Charles Marshburn: Mass Migration

By Shannon Sexton

I wish the migrants luck with their endeavor to find a "dry" county once we decide to allow the legal sale of alcohol on March 22 here in Adair.

Russell just voted to allow legal sales and I've been contacted by folks in Clinton, Cumberland, Taylor and Metcalfe counties in the past two weeks regarding their expected or in progress petitions.

Someone should alert Casey County however - they may need to prepare for the large influx of migrants and it would certainly be the neighborly thing to do.

(Humorous) Regards,

Brandon Burns: Why not Wet/Dry at regular election?

Brandon Burns writes:
If a benefit of alcohol sales is tax revenue, why wasn't the petitions started later and/or turned in at a time that would allow the wet/dry vote to be put on a ballot such as a primary. $15,000 for a special election seems like it would be considered to be an addition to an upcoming ballot. Special elections are widely known to be costly and have a lower voter turnout in comparison. Are there laws that keep these from being added to a later upcoming ballot? - Brandon Burns

Mystery photo IDed as bracket fungus, Turkey Tail mushroom

April Shepperd writes:
This is a very common mushroom called Turkey Tail and various forms of this bracket fungus can be found all over the world. The fungus can harm a sick tree, but most often it helps break down old, dead logs and tree trunks, so their nutrients can return to the soil to be used again. Squirrels, turtles, and various insects love to munch on it. --April Shepperd

Carol Perkins: Only on a small town radio station

A caller to the Susan and Carol-Unscripted radio show wanted to know the latest on "Tommy." She was updated without the last name having to be given. Last Tuesday a lady called into the Susan and Carol-Unscripted show (on the Hoss, FM 99.1, 10am-11amCT, on Tuesdays) from TOPPS manufacturing to check on one of our well-known residents. "We want to know something about Tommy but no one knows anything up here. We thought you all might know."

I reported what I knew based on being at the same church he attends, and thanked her for calling. Only in a small town can we call into a radio show and find out the welfare of one of our own. Not only was that special, but the fact the ladies wanted to know was even better. Tommy who? Well, doesn't everyone know Tommy?

Wonders why The Law can't enforce alcoholic beverage laws

Willard Jessee writes:
There's A lot of talk about illegal sales of alcohol in our county, don't we have laws that would put those selling alcohol out of business? We have a great State Police presence in our county, a well qualified Sheriff Department and a great City Police force. Why not put our assets to toward stopping illegal alcohol sales. Concerned citizen . . . - Willard Jessee
Thanks Willard Jessee: Guess that will be a part of the equation when the vote is taken on March 22, 2016. Some will think they are putting finite resources to better use on bigger issues. Some won't. Many wonder where prohibition is working. Wonder if anyone could cite an example of a jurisdiction where it does. - EW

Letter: Thinks self-control is exception to the rule

Deb P. writes:
The question I would like to pose to this woman would be, "Have you stared in the face of a parent as they watch their child die from alcoholism, or a alcohol related wreck because one of their so-called-Christian friends didn't have a problem to allow other people's children to drink in their home because it took the edge off?

People seem to think that it is ok to drink occasionally, but for that one who has self-control, what about the many others that do not have self-control?

Cave City has become a wet town and I know of a young man who lives so close he does not need a car, which he no longer has because he wrecked it while drinking, he has injured himself so bad that he may never be able to work public work, and he can walk from home to the bank to the liquor store within 2 blocks of his home and drink himself into a stupor while his family's heart is breaking.

What's the difference between a caucus and a primary?

Zachery Oakes, Managing Editor of Raiderview, the award-winning student-run newspaper of Lindsey Wilson College, submitted this story by staff-member Cody Maggard about the differences in a caucus and a primary election.
Note: For a list of local area polling places with street numbers and addresses see CM: Adair, Casey, Cumberland, Green, Metcalfe, Russell and Taylor Counties, with street numbers and addresses. For a list of caucus locations state wide, go to Where do I Caucus? at the RPK.org, the Republican Party of Kentucky website

By Cody Maggard, Staff Writer, Raiderview@lindsey.edu

With 2016 now upon us, the race for President of the United States becomes a focal point across the nation.

The Republican caucus will still take place even though Rand Paul has dropped out of the race for President of the United States, and now has the opportunity to be a factor in the ultimate decision of who is nominated, since it will be in March instead of May.

Given the two party system in America, this is the time where Republicans and Democrats debate about who will ultimately win the nomination and represent their respective parties in November's general election. To narrow these candidates down, a series of elections take place across the country in each state, usually called primaries, or caucuses.
