Billy Joe Fudge poses question on Adair geological oddity

He wonders why soil over bedrock is 20 times more in Sparksville than the Flatwoods

Billy Joe Fudge writes:
Mr. Garmon, I'm greatly humbled in the presence of such scientific prowess. I, as I'm sure you are painfully aware, have a Doctorate in "Much Knowledge About Little". I know your eyes are glassing over with jealously but I cannot help bragging a bit by adding that I am "well-respected" in this discipline.

Nevertheless, on a more serious note and just in case I'm ever presented with the following query in a trivia tournament, "would you mind explaining why it is only 3 to 7 feet to the bedrock in the Flatwoods while there is as much as 60 feet of soil on top of the bedrock on Sparks Ridge"? - Billy Joe Fudge

Travis Garmon: On Caney Fork Creek bed of creek

He offers one correction: Creek Beds called 'slate rock' in this area are usually 'shale." He thinks phenomenon on Caney Fork Creek, at a point alongside KY 1913 in Green County result ancient fault system split, not by the relatively recent New Madrid Earthquakes
Click on headline for complete essay

By Travis Garmon

Please allow me to offer one correction to the Caney Fork Creek article: The bottom unit in the bed of the creek is a shale, not a slate. This is a very common misconception in the area, and I'm not sure how it got started or propagated so completely throughout the region. Shales are sedimentary rocks that are composed primarily of clay and organic carbon, deposited in deep marine environments, deep lakes, and swamp-like areas. Slates are metamorphic rocks, formed by the heating and compression of shales and other clay-rich rocks during deep burial or mountain-building events. There is no evidence to suggest that the near-surface rocks in present-day south-central KY were ever subjected to any degree of metamorphism, and thus most any rock units in the area referred to as "slate" are in fact most likely shales.

A New Approach to observing Veterans Day: In the Schools

Personal Commentary

By Peggy Fudge

I think the idea of Veterans Day as a school holiday is good. But, I don't think it will accomplish intended purpose.

It will be just another day off. Maybe it could become a day of focus and education (in all classes, not just social studies) about all American Vets, from all wars and conflicts.

Gerald Doss: Misplaced concern. Meth is the new concern

Meth is the new scourge

Gerald Doss writes:
Seems like we are all up het over the wet/dry issue. Each week in court news there are several meth cases in court, very few alcohol cases in court while alcohol has been in Adair County as long as I remember.

Meth seems to be the new scourge. Maybe we need to refocus. What do you think?

I cant see why legal alcohol could do more harm than illegal alcohol and meth. The only plus is the county would get the taxes. if I'm wrong tell me how.
