JIM: 100 years ago the News called for Cleaner Columbia

Jim writes:
Oddly enough, I came across this earlier today (February 19, 2016). It appeared in the Adair County News 100 years (less four days) ago under the heading "A Cleaner Columbia":
"The Civic League of Columbia asks the citizens to cooperate with them in a general clean up of the streets and alleys of the town. The back alleys are filthy and filled with rubbish. Papers, straw and other material are burned on the square; this is both unhealthful and dangerous. Old bottles, banana peelings, rotten apples and other refuse matter are daily to be found on the square and on the streets of the town..."
Sadly, some things never change. --Jim

Guy Babin: Where is the pride in our piece of heaven

Guy Babin writes:
We love our new home in Adair County- we hate the litter though. Beer cans and bottles strewn along our country byways, white plastic silage and hay bale wrappers caught in stream bank trees, fast food trash, old tires, and much more.

Where's the pride and respect for the beauty of our piece of heaven?

Senator Max Wise: Myths & Facts about SB 1

Senator Wise presents his case for SB 1
Click on headline for complete Personal Commentary

By State Senator Max Wise, (R-Campbellsville)
16th District: Adair, Clinton, Cumberland, McCreary, Russell, Taylor, and Wayne Counties

When I examine the performance of our public schools today, I do so with great distress. At the present time, some 7 out of 10 Kentucky 8th graders do not meet national standards for math, while 2 out of 3 Kentucky 4th graders do not meet national standards for reading. This status quo is simply unacceptable. As a husband and a father of four children, I understand and share the deep concerns of my constituents for the future of the children of this Commonwealth. Parents have told me that a quality public education, which will equip their children with the tools they need to succeed in today's changing economy and allow them to reach their true God-given potential, is their number-one priority. Our Senate Republican Caucus responded and made improving public schools its legislative priority as well. To underscore this point, we filed education reform legislation as Senate Bill (SB) 1. On Wednesday, it passed the State Senate chambers by a resounding 25-12 vote and will now be sent to the House.

Justin Dawson: Alcohol already here; voting Yes is step forward

Personal commentary

Justin Dawson writes: Dear Editor,

I'm writing to urge Adair Co. voters to be informed before making their decision on the Wet/Dry vote. Alcohol is already here. Being a taxpayer, I'd welcome the relief of not bearing the entire tax burden of city and county services when we could collect revenue from an existing source.

Voting YES is a step toward growth for our community. We have to start somewhere.

Thanks,
Justin Dawson
