Scenic Russell Co. KY: Green River Knob view

2016-01-31 - KY 910 near Jct with KY 3525 - Photo by Ed Waggener, CM photo.
Green River Knob, on the Casey-Pulaski County line, is seen in the background to the left of the silo on one of Russell County's prettiest farms at the 5 mile point on KY 910/Gosser Ridge Road. near its intersection with KY 3525/Old Gosser Ridge Road. Gosser Ridge native, Nick Roy, whose family place was on KY 3525/Old Gosser Ridge Road, filled us in on some details: The scene is in what is known as the Gosser Ridge Community. Left, The first white barn is recognized today as the late Garmon Gosser's farm. It is a full cattle handling facility where cattle are weighed prior to shipping, often out west. The silo is KC Farms, Dante Carpenter's place. Dante's father was the late Kamos Carpenter (d. 2005). Dante's mother is Garmoline Carpenter. Right in this area, the watershed splits, one side drains Lake Cumberland, the other other Green River. - CM. WATCH (Working Actively Toward Community Health) video

This video, produced in 2014, is an increasingly important milestone in a coordinated effort to improve the physical health of the Adair County community. The magazine's support of the aims is based on a realization that this may be the most important economic development project Adair County could undertake, doing more to improve the wealth of the counter than any other project, though, more importantly, the health aspects in and of themselves make this an imperative for 2016.

WATCH for challenges to your family to eat better, get moving

Can you cook a meal at home this week that contains nothing from a drive-through, box, bag, microwave nor can? This workshop focused on the need for people to grow their own gardens, have sit-down family meals and show the next generation how to do it. Discussion sparked a comment from Terry Partin who mentioned a new 4-H gardening activity that requires some of the produce from each garden to be marketed at the farmers market. His comment sparked the idea from Debbie Cowan who said she felt sure they could work out more gardens at the school campus and plan to cook what they grow to teach children how to use food right from the garden. That sparked questions about how to keep varmints from eating the vegetable plants out of garden attempts, and many more ideas.

By Linda Waggener

A lot of us are sick. Diabetes, sedentary lifestyles and smoking are three factors that have helped us earn the label of a "distressed county". Because of this, we qualify for assistance in the form of workshops, like the subject of this WATCH Coalition workshop, Thursday, January 28, 2016, at the Adair County Health Department, working on grants to help us improve our lot. Health educators Jelaine Harlow and Destiny Greer with the Lake Cumberland District Health Department are working every day for grants that will support continuing our path to wellness.

JIM: Weather Signs, 100 years ago, Feb 1916

The old-timers, like Linda's Granddaddy Marcum, had powers of prognostication which work, even today, though modernity requires some to have to observe neighbor's chimneys to know to 'Expect a strong wind with stormy weather when smoke from chimney hangs near the ground.'

By JIM

Linda's comment that her Granddaddy Marcum had "many sayings about the weather and signs in the sky" (See: Mother Nature's artwork from storm one week ago) presaged my rheumy old eyes chancing upon a list of weather signs first published in Farm & Fireside magazine an shortly thereafter, republished in the Adair County News one hundred years ago this week - early February, 1916. Said the introductory paragraph, "Experience has shown them to be fairly reliable and some of them can be explained on a scientific basis."

The list, as transcribed verbatim (within the limits of faltering sight and fumbling fingers) from the News:

Tom Chaney: World Enough and Time

Of Writers And Their Books: World Enough and Time. Tom ends this review of Robert Penn Warren’s book with a quotation “if we can only know that life tells no lies in the end, for all the lies, single and particular, will at last speak together in a great chorus of truth in many voices.” This column first appeared 31 July 2005.

World Enough and Time

Jeremiah Beaumont was born in 1801 in Glasgow County, Kentucky, on the edge of the section known as the Barrens. That name does not do less than a wrong to the land, for the first settlers who came found a high, shelving and rolling country covered with grass where elk grazed peacefully and where there was no need for the ax to clear a field for the plow.
Thus Robert Penn Warren sets a familiar landscape for his 1950 novel, World Enough and Time [Random House, 1950]. The geography of the heart is more difficult to divine.
