Board of Elections votes to hire attorney in mayoral election case Board of Elections vote leaves question of how the legal fees will be paid in light of failure, in two votes, to gain Fiscal Court approval. One vote was to lay the burden of the decision on the County Clerk, who would decide whether to pay the fees from her office's budget. The other was a straight up vote on whether Fiscal Court would continue payments for the outside attorney to represent the Board of Elections in the case, now in the Kentucky Supreme Court. Click on headline for complete story. By Ed Waggener Following a fiscal court meeting which saw the Adair County Board of Elections lose in two separate votes which would have county taxpayers foot the bill for the Board's legal challenges to Judge Judy Vance's ruling invalidating the City of Columbia's Mayoral Election, the Board voted to proceed on its own to hire Attorney James Howard to represent them to answer a motion by Attorney Elmer George seeking a discretionary review of a 2-1 decision in the State Court of Appeals not to review an earlier 2-1 decision reversing Judge Vance's ruling. Andy Beshear's Statement on being Sworn in today . . . . . . as Kentucky's 50th Attorney General Statement from Andy Beshear FRANKFORT, KY (Mon 4 Jan 2016) - "I was honored to be sworn in today as Kentucky's 50th Attorney General by Kentucky Supreme Court Chief Justice John D. Minton Jr. I congratulate the other Constitutional Officers who took the oath of office today and I look forward to working with each of them. "As Attorney General, I'm committed to strengthening the quality of life for every family and community across the state. Kentucky is a special place, a Commonwealth with a rich history where pioneer families worked to create a state based on core values and beliefs that all Kentuckians take pride in still today. We are poised for greatness, but to ensure we reach our goals, there is more work to be done. We must once again embody the relentless determination of our ancestors to ensure a great Kentucky for our children and grandchildren. "The Attorney General is the people's lawyer, and I view it as the chief advocate and protector of our families. My office has a mission focused on addressing the persistent challenges our families face - preventing and prosecuting child abuse, protecting seniors from scams and abuse, better addressing Kentucky's drug epidemic and seeking justice for victims of rape. "Solving these problems requires that we come together - not as members of any party - but as one community. That's why I ask every citizen and leader to join with us in making Kentucky an even better place to live, work and raise a family." 2016-01-04 09:29:46 | Comments | Printable version
Long haired, Himalayan-like cat in the care of good Samaritan There's a long-haired, blue-eyed cat, marked like a Himalayan, at our shop this morning. It's a pet, came right to me, and was hungry. I fed it in the hopes it would get in one of Baby Cat's old boxes and sleep instead of getting into traffic and killed. If this cat belongs to anyone, please take it home. Joyce M.
