Letter: Thinks CofC should support wet vote to expand commerce

Chris Oliver writes:
I'd like to start by thanking our Chamber leaders for their efforts. Their time and commitment is very much appreciated.

With all of the excitement about its aforementioned efforts, I find it peculiar that our Chamber of Commerce has not publicly made a statement supporting the biggest commerce opportunity for our community in a number of years. The impending wet vote, which will likely be on a ballot in the next 3 to 5 months, is a homerun opportunity for our Chamber. It's a no-brainer with regard to local business development opportunities.

We can discuss the potential for tourism and work readiness all we want. For the time being, our community has tied one hand behind our own back on those issues. I would hope and expect that our local Chamber of Commerce would embrace their leadership position and publicly support a legal effort to expand commerce and improve economic development.

2015 a year of distinction, achievement at LWC

By Duane Bonifer

Distinction and achievement were bywords for 2015 at Lindsey Wilson College. The college -- which awarded more than 600 degrees in 2015 -- celebrated several academic and athletic milestones that underscore its continued growth and evolution as a distinctive liberal arts college.

In addition to enrolling more than 2,600 students for the fourth consecutive school year, LWC also had its largest faculty in the college's 112-year history -- 118 faculty welcomed students for the start of the 2015-16 school year. More than 1,000 students lived in college residence halls throughout the calendar year as well. And students were greeted by two new A.P. White Campus signs, made possible by gifts from the Classes of 1965 and 2015.

One hundred years ago: first news of the new year, 1916

Happy New Year, Adair County!

By Jim

A century ago, the first edition of the local paper published in the new year very nearly carried more news on the front page than there was space in which to print it.

Clifton Scott had been paying call on his sweetie, Amanda (also known as Mandy Belle) Curry for some time and the young couple (21 and 20, respectively) decided the Christmas season was a good time to begin their life together. Acting in accordance with that belief, they slipped off to Jeffersonville, Indiana, where, on the 28th of December, 1915, the rites of marriage made them as one. The newlyweds arrived back in Columbia about one o'clock Wednesday morning, December 29th, and "about 9 o'clock started for the Rugby section of this county, where they will reside."

Jon Halsey comments on the state of Adair Co. education

I am all for progress, as long as that progress leads to better outcomes. Two cliches keep rolling around in my head: "How do we know where we're going if we don't know where we came from" and Edmund Burke's famous "Those who don't know history are doomed to repeat it." Our successes as well as our mistakes as well as those of our civilization should be our guidebook to where we are headed for the future. I fervently hope that we do not become a society of technocrats who have no concept that as a member of a much larger society we have a role and a duty to each other. - JON HALSEY

All of the "Career Readiness" goals are laudable and necessary. The committment to College Prep courses is also welcome and hopefully will not get lost in the "shuffle."

Same kind of effort need to make students knowledgeable civics, government

It would be great to see the same kind of effort toward preparing our students to become knowledgeable and upstanding citizens which to my understanding was one of the primary reasons for schools in the first instance. It seems that throughout the U.S. there is a tendency to eliimanate American History and Government classes in favor of Mandarin Chinese or whatever.

Town meeting: regionalization, budget, HB 463, VA, more

Will there be a "Heartland Caucus?" Regionalization, working together, was a highlight of town meeting at the Adair Public Library. Will HB463 be revised to toughen up on crime after murder of Daniel Ellis? These and other topics were discussed.

By Linda Waggener

KY State Sen. Max Wise and State Rep. John "Bam" Carney welcomed Adair Countians in an open town meeting December 28, 2015 at the public library for news and discussion of State Government. The meeting was the second of six county town meetings before the Legislature begins its long 60-day session on Tuesday, January 5.

The mood of the meeting was inclusive. Victoria Pike said afterward, "I think both men reached across the table to show how important it is for all of us to work together."

Rob Wilkerson says he will pursue seat on CAUD board

About: - PSC updates list of CAUD board candidates, extends deadline

By Ed Waggener

In a communication at 11:02 this morning, Fri 1 Jan 2016, Rob Wilkerson, head of ATS Mobility and Wilkerson Auto & Mobility Sales, informed us that he will pursue his candidacy for the vacant seat on the Columbia/Adair Utilities District with the Public Service Commission.

We have not heard directly from Sharon Shelds-Smock, but our best guess is that she will apply for the position as well.

In all, the PSC will have eight very strong - some super qualified by experience, temperament, and vision - candidates from which to appoint the next CAUD board member.

KY Afield Outdoors: Closing out 2015 with a look ahead

Year's highlights include major renovations to Hatchery Creek at Wolf Creek National Fish Hatchery in Russell County.

By Lee McClellan

Frankfort, KY - The first day of winter arrived last week but you wouldn't have known it based on the mild temperatures experienced across Kentucky.

The spring-like weather conditions tempted hunters and anglers to squeeze a last-minute outing into their busy holiday schedules - that is, until torrential rains thwarted such opportunism.

Fortunately, there will be opportunities in the year ahead. And, like you, the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources is looking forward to 2016.

Kentucky Color: Antioch School Picture

By Billy Joe Fudge

This is a picture I believe to have been taken around 1938. Mom (Zelma Stotts Fudge is right in the middle of the second row right behind the blonde boy kneeling and holding the sign. The sign actually seems to be a blackboard.

Do you see any of your family members or do you have a more accurate date? My Mother was born in '31 and guesses she was around 7 or 8 at the time.

I noticed,
  • there is chicken wire (poultry netting for the more refined) on the window and a couple of panes of broken glass,
  • there might be one pair of shoes in the crowd besides the teacher,
  • there is not one incident of juvenile obesity in the entire school which probably single-handedly debunks the genetic propensity theory,
  • and that dresses, short pants and bibbed overalls were very much in vogue.
These were kids growing up in the midst of the depression and as far as I can tell, lack didn't kill any of them.In fact, lack and difficulty may have honed their wit, genius and character to a razor's edge preparing them for their well deserved title as, "the greatest generation". Mystery of the list of CAUD 'finalists' may be cleared up

About: Sharon Shields-Smock wonders why her name not on PSC list

By Ed Waggener

Columbia/Adair Chamber: A great 2015; big goals for 2016

Chamber's usual successes, Treats on the Town, Shop Local, and Christmas in Columbia were monumental blockbusters this year - with clever new ideas overwhelmingly embraced by the public. Columbia was designated a Trail Town in 2015. This coming year, there are big goals: Fulfilling the potential of being a Trailtown, USA, and growing tourism dollars. And, with a united community, making Economic Progress by becoming an official Work Ready Community

As we turn the page on yet another year, our Chamber of Commerce eagerly awaits 2016 and all the wonderful new things it holds in store for our community. The Chamber has a rich history of serving and being part of Columbia and Adair County...from sponsoring community events like Treats on the Town, Shop Local and Christmas in Columbia to co-sponsoring Squarecrows and Christmas Card Village to Chamber member events like the Chamber Picnic and Chamber Awards Banquet...and of course the Chamber Roadside Park.

Robert Stone Poetry: The Smile of Knowing

The smile of knowing
~ a sonnet for the birthday of Lisa Comperry and for the New Year
No happy new is greeting kind to give
unless the giver means to be a source
of inspiration and support , to live
inspiriting with helps to stay the course.

No happy old is parting glad to say
unless the speaker shares a secret bond
of memories and future plans to play
adventures prompting other to respond.

No happy now is cheering hope to hear
unless the listener can feel the heart
of warm acceptance and resolve to cheer
experiments discovering new start.

No happy ever lasts beyond the smile
of knowing undertakings are worthwhile.
