Owner of Preston Farms Popcorn guilty of bank fraud

Louisville, KY - The owner of the shuttered Preston Farms Popcorn, LLC (Preston) pleaded guilty to bank fraud today, before Chief Judge Joseph H. McKinley, Jr., in U.S. District Court, for diverting buyers' payments toward the operation of his business rather than towards the payment of his loan, announced U.S. Attorney John E. Kuhn, Jr.

Kermit W. Highfield, 43, of Louisville, pleaded guilty to a single count of bank fraud, stemming from a business loan from UPS Business Capital Credit (UPS) that was insured by the United States Export-Import Bank (Ex-Im Bank). This loan was an advance on payments due from Preston's international buyers. Preston defaulted on the UPS loan, and the Ex-Im Bank reimbursed UPS, resulting in a loss of $110,678.74 to the Ex-Im Bank.

Friday was a black day for Adair County's close knit Ellis Clan

A brilliant young police officer's life was snuffed out in a craven senseless act. His career has been in Richmond. For Adair and Taylor Counties, the loss is especially painful. Det. Ellis is a member of an Ellistown-centered family which traces its continuous Adair County presence since just after the Revolutionary War, and long ties with Knifley schools. Det. Ellis' father and all his uncles attended the school. And for a time, he was a student there before transferring to Taylor County.

When a tornado took the back of his house in Cane Valley, KY, on March 28, 2014, Robert Ellis remembers thinking, "This is the blackest day of my life." His beautiful old two and a half story house at the corner of Beechtop Road and Old Cane Valley Road had to be torn down.

He thought at the time that this would be the nadir of his life, that he would never see a worse one.

But it wasn't to be. On Friday, November 6, 2015, the unthinkable happened when his nephew, Det. Daniel Neil Ellis, died in the UK Medical Center in Lexington. "That was the blackest day of my life. I never knew such depression before. I hope our family never goes through it again."

Bertram, 47, James W. Bottom, 62, Brian C. Walters, 43, all of Russell Springs, KY; Dr. Bryan S. Wood, 48, of Danville, KY; and Dr. Robin G. Peavler, 54, of Lexington, KY. LEXINGTON, KY (Fri 6 Oct 2015) A federal grand jury has returned a 100-count indictment charging five men, who owned a clinical laboratory, with billing health care third-party payors for urine drug tests that were medically unnecessary and not eligible for reimbursement.

Tex Ritter survived perils at Swan Theatre, in Edmonton, KY

By Linda Waggener

My mom, Geniece Marcum and I saw a photo from the one-time Swan Theatre in Edmonton while visiting Ma's Deli on Greensburg Road, Edmonton, KY. I had never heard of it, but Mom remembers going here with her mother and teenage brother Russell Leftwich in the 30s.

Russell had insisted they go to see a Tex Ritter movie. Geniece said her mother, Addie Turner Leftwich, squealed each time the cowboy was in danger, but Russell reassured her the star would be alright and indeed the ending was a happy one.

Tom Chaney: Shaken, not Stirred

Of Writers And Their Books: Shaken, not Stirred. Tom says James Bond was suave. He rushed about thwarting the evil communists and other malefactors, keeping his hair in place, never soiling his clothes, and always escaping behind the curtains in the boudoir with the beautiful girl. This column first appeared 9 January 2011.

Shaken, not Stirred

I been thinking back to the golden days of the early 1960's. I had escaped from the clutches of the Baptist seminary in Louisville in part because I had read On the Road by Jack Kerouac, and in the second part because of a related sense that I had no business trying to tell anybody how to think and live.

Of course that led to my not being clear about what I thought or how I ought to live.

So I fled west
