Letter: Halloween Memories

Martha Berry writes:
One of things I remember being told about Halloween was when we lived in Brandenburg and someone or several someones put an outhouse on the top of a telephone pole. I don't know the "rest of the story" so I can't tell where it came from or how it was gotten down. I have to assume it did not belong to the parsonage even though it was on the edge of Church property. --Martha Berry

Striking While the Iron is Hot

Note: What follows is the transcript of a speech given by Dr. Heilman at the Annual President's Club Dinner, Campbellsville University, October 26, 2015

By Dr. E. Bruce Heilman, Chancellor, University of Richmond

Mr. Chairman, Mr. President, guests, and to the most important constituency of Campbellsville University, members of the President's Club. When earlier I was asked to be the speaker on this occasion, I was without guidelines as to what my subject might be. Since that earlier assignment, however, I made a decision that has changed the nature of my presence at the podium.

President Carter has announced a new building on the horizon followed by Chairman Owens publically announcing that I will donate the lead gift toward funding this exciting adventure. So, with the anticipation of a giant step forward in facilities, I caption my comments "Strike while the iron is hot." We must strike now while we have a president who has moved this institution far and has yet the time and capacity to move it much farther. "Striking while the iron is hot" should be our motto.

Thank you from Metcalfe Co. Midddle School

Kelly Crawhorn writes:

Metcalfe County Middle School would like to thank each and every person who supported our Fall Fling. This was the first event of this nature that we have held in several years. Many, many people contributed to make this a very successful event.

Thanks to everyone who donated items, came to the event, bought tickets, placed bids on silent auction items, and volunteered their time. We are well on our way to reaching our goal of purchasing a poster maker. We couldn't have done it without the support of our community. Thank you on behalf of all MCMS staff.

Frank Dickerson: Gordon Cabbell was school teacher at Pellyton

Frank Dickerson writes:
Gordon Cabbell was a school teacher at Pellyton school in the twenties when my mother was a student there. He was also a distant relative. Elizabeth Cabbell was my great grandmother; wife of my great grandfather Jesse M. Dickerson. Both are buried in the Pellyton cemetery with grave markers listed as "Dickenson." It seems that we are not sure of our surname.

The composition books would be interesting to see, but I have no wish to have them.

Thanks,

Two $1 million gifts announced at CU President's Club dinner

Dr. E. Bruce Heilman, a 1949 alumnus of Campbellsville University, World War II veteran and now the Chancellor at University of Richmond, was the keynote speaker and announced a $1 million gift to his alma mater. This lead gift launched the public phase of the "Our Time, This Place" capital campaign and that gift was matched by an unnamed donor for a total of $2 million. The building itself is to cost an estimated $5 million and almost half of that was raised in one night. During the silent phase (2011-2015), the university has raised over $45 million and is close to its $61 million goal that will help not only athletics but also campus wide.

CAMPBELLSVILLE, KY - After attending two schools his first three years in college, Jacob Russell has finally found a home at Campbellsville University. The Fighting Tiger football player has rewritten the record books in every offensive statistical category for a quarterback, but the one stat that isn't tallied on that scoreboard - servant leadership.

Russell was recognized on Monday night for his dedication and commitment to athletics, academics and also leadership inside the university and the community.

Along with two other students -- Tori Hester (Henderson, KY) and Logan Curtis (Lawrenceburg, KY) -- Russell was recognized at the 36th Annual President's Club dinner, which hosts donors who give more than $1,000 annually to the university. The three students all received the Student Leadership Award, which was handed out by President Dr. Michael V. Carter and Dr. E. Bruce Heilman.

Carol Perkins: Halloween when I was growing up in Edmonton

In the 60s, Halloween was a time to do battle
Next earlier Carol Perkins column: Carol Perkins: I've been hanging up on Mike for weeks now

By Carol Perkins

Halloween was once a time when parents took their kids out early to trick or treat because they were not safe after dark.

That was when small towns rumbled with pumpkin fights, firecracker battles, and fresh eggs. Days before Halloween, some teenagers prepared for battle by invading pumpkin patches out in the county. This was long before growing pumpkins was a for profit enterprise; farmers grew them to feed their hogs.

Others drove across the Tennessee line to buy firecrackers, and even more stored up dozens of eggs.

Joyce Coomer has nine composition books of historic value

Books belonged Stanley Rubarts and Gordon Cabbell. From 1923 and 1924. Printing Creations owner would like to make gift of books to interested descendant(s) of Stanley Rubarts of Dunnville

Joyce Coomer writes:

I have nine composition books that belonged to Stanley Rubarts of Dunnville, Kentucky. The topics include physical geography, agriculture and literature. He had a very nice handwriting and while the books have gotten damp and ink has faded or run, most of the handwriting is still legible.

I also have one composition book that belonged to -- the best I can make out the name -- Gordon Cabbell. This book looks as if had been passed around and different students wrote short things in it.

These books have dates in them of 1923 and 1924.

If any of Stanley Rubarts' descendants would be interested in having his composition books, they can stop by Printing Creations at 110 N. Monroe Street, and pick them up.

Because the other book has "news" items about people I knew when I was a child, I would like to keep it myself. - JOYCE M. COOMER. Phone 270-384-4495
