Of all the magic on the Square, kicking leaves was the best

2015-10-20 - Front entrance, Historic Adair County Courthouse, 500 Public Square, Columbia, KY - Photo by Pen.
Downtown Columbia is a Magical place for kids at this time of the year, with the Squarecrows around every turn, outdoor diners, street vendors, the Fountain Plaza, and plenty of friendly people. Hailey loved to linger along the way at each attraction but it was hardest to get her to resume the walk when she discovered perfectly kickable dry maple leaves. She was deep in kicking leaves mood when her dad captured this moment, today, Tuesday, October 20, 2015. - GRANDDAD

Maury Lewis well pleased with the work of Selby Asphalt workers

Maury Lewis writes:
I had some rocks put into a 3 bay garage and my driveway by three men who are employed by Selby Asphalt and I have never had such nice people do work for me, in Alabama or here. They were very friendly and every one of them wanted to be sure I was pleased with their work before they left. Yes, I would highly recommend them if anyone needs rocks or asphalt work done. - Maury Lewis

We have heard and are answering the call. The Adair Heritage Association in partnership with the Chamber of Commerce is planning something for the Square in Columbia and hopefully lining the streets as well for Christmas . . . similar to Sqarecrows but totally different. Stay tuned as we will unveil the plan soon because, "Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus." - ELLEN ZORNES, President Adair

Robby Morrison shares method to turn tables on telemarketers

Robby Morrison writes:
Reading Carol Perkins’ comments on nuisance callers I felt motivated to share a method a friend shared with me a few years back. On its face it is somewhat sacrilegious, but my friend is a minister and given that telemarketers are likely the devil incarnate, God will probably forgive us.

My minister friend, Mike, said that he had found the solution to telemarketers. When one calls he starts off as if he is interested and then turns the table to selling Jesus to them. He said that made them hang up quick and they don’t call back.

Just for kicks, you might want to do it with your best Appalachian snake-handling preacher imitation. - Robby Morrison

Wants more information about Project Fi in Kentucky

Comments about: KY-FI: Using Project Fi in the Bluegrass by Tom Waggener

Alex Ortiz writes:
Good Morning. I saw the article online from Tom Waggener about Project Fi in Kentucky. I haven't seen many updates and am wondering how it is working out. I live in Campbellsville, have a Nexus 6 on the way, and am considering switching since I don't have good phone service at my house. It would be great to use it on wifi. Have you all used it much in Campbellsville? How is the cell service? I've heard Sprint and T-mobile don't cover this area that well.

In the articles they mention the size of the nexus 6, there is now a nexus 5x and 6p that are both smaller if that is a concern. Thank you, - ALEX ORTIZ
Thanks, Alex - Not sure if Tom has used Project Fi in Campbellsville - he's a Shelby County resident - but we'll post any information he would like to contribute and, in the meantime, hope other readers can share experiences here on CM - EW

Letter: Agrees with Carol Perkins on nuisance callers

Martha Berry writes:
I love Carol Perkins' articles, but today's is one most of us can identify with. My "Mike" had a different name. He told me that he could tell that I was having problems with my computer. (I was not having any problems. In fact, one time I had just gotten the computer back from the local repair shop.) One call I let him talk and he told me he couldn't fix the problem but would transfer me to Microsoft for $500.00 and he was sure they could fix the "problem". Obviously, I was not going to give the anonymous caller the money and when he insisted I told him that I was going to write Microsoft about any "problems" that I was having. I did write Microsoft and they responded. They told me they do not outsource any work and had no one by that name working for them.

My son asks for the callers name and phone number. Of course they are not going to give him that information. His answer to that is that she/he has his, so why shouldn't he have his/hers.

Carol is right, the do not call list does not work because they are either calling from Jamaica or are ignoring the law, knowing that we probably will not report them. --Martha Berry

Carol Perkins: I've been hanging up on Mike for weeks now

'There are worst things to endure than unwanted phone calls, but I sure do get tired of my phone ringing at promptly nine in the morning with the happy voice of Mike. He does not know how to take a hint.' - CAROL PERKINS

Next earlier Carol Perkins column: Carol Perkins: Fond memories - I love 4-H

By Carol Perkins

Mike calls me at promptly nine in the morning. His voice is very nice and if I met him I'm sure he would be a nice young man, but that is the problem: I have never met this Mike who has my number. Each day he opens with the same words: "Hello, this is Mike and I'm happy to be calling you today about...." Click. I hang up. I have been hanging up on Mike for weeks now but he doesn't take a hint. I think he is a computer.
