Peggy Fudge: tap water smelled and tasted like dirt

Peggy Fudge writes:
My tap water this morning smelled and tasted like dirt. If this has been going on for a couple of days, it explains why my tea was not up to par yesterday. I usually only use water from my 'Pur' pitcher. It was empty and I defaulted to tap. Yuck. - Peggy Fudge

Adair gets on Work Ready Community

If Adair County wants to be competitive in attracting new business it is essential that we embrace the Work Ready program.

By Ron Heath, Chair, Adair Work Ready Community Committee
Chamber Insights

Adair County received word that the Kentucky Work Force Investment Board has approved the county's request for a one year extension to meet all the criteria to obtain full recognition as a Work Ready Community. You may ask "Why is it important for Adair County to pursue this certification?" The number one goal of the Economic Development Authority, City Council, County Board of Supervisors, the Chamber of Commerce, and concerned residents is to attract new businesses and industries to the area. Yet to date there's little to show for the thousands of dollars that has been spent on various programs to achieve that goal.

David Moffett: Water has greenish smell, tastes like dirt

David Moffett writes:
Hi Ed, I live at 207 W Fortune Street (Columbia, KY). Beginning Sunday evening the city water had an odd smell and taste. It smelled "greenish," sort of a high alkaline smell. And basically it tastes bad - sort of like dirt. I didn't pay much attention to it. Then, yesterday morning I made coffee with the water. Soon thereafter I was having stomach cramps. I managed to work in the morning at the college but had to leave around 11amCT. I slept until 4pmCT and then got sick. I think the water is the issue, rather than a stomach bug. Did the water company put something in the water? Or, is there a line break and they don't know it? I thought I should let you know. This morning the water continues to smell and taste bad so I got some bottled water to make coffee. Certainly not going to drink the tap water. Thanks and have a good day, David - DAVID MOFFETT
Thanks, David Moffett for the heads up. We live on the other end of Fortune Street and have noticed a worsening taste - and think it may be because we at the "end of the line" by a water hydrant, which may not have been given its essential every 30 day flushing. But coffee this morning was pretty okay. I'm sure that the Columbia/Adair Utilities District will address the problem when you call them - and may respond to your letter here. If anyone else is experiencing the proble - or not - we'd appreciate a note. - EW

William Grider: My View on current politics

A look at the big picture. Writer believes, absolutely, that School System has made under Superintendent Reed AND that some things could be better. He examines parental responsibilities for their own child. He examines the politics of the system, and points out effects of electing single issue candidates, and wonders why anyone should be surprised at the recent failure of the Adair County School Board to extend the contract of Superintendent Alan W. Reed

By William Grider
Personal Commentary

I don't normally speak publically on items of a petty political nature, although that seems to be all politics is about anymore. I also want to make clear this is not a writing of a personal attack or in favor or against what happened at the board meeting.

It is just me wanting to know why people are surprised with the results we keep getting from the officials we keep electing.

Jon Halsey: Trish Zatkoff bolsters his high opinion of Mr. Reed

Jon Halsey writes:
Thanks to Ms. Zatkoff for the clarification. Her detailed explanation bolsters my high opinion of Mr. Reed and his Staff as educators who are willing to "go the extra mile" and not be hindered by an unfordable stream. They do whatever it takes to build a bridge and just keep on keeping on. I also have some pungent comments on the matter of various Community Boards but in the interest of hoping the boiling pot will soon cool to a simmer, I'll not add more kindling or take a poker to that firebox. --jon halsey

Bill Steele III - Views on education, current issues

Personal commentary

Webster's defines the word "teacher" as "one whose occupation is to instruct." Herein lies the underlying problem! Teachers today are far too often called upon to fill the roles of so much more. They are part time mothers and fathers to many, councelors to others, a friend to all when needed, and the list goes on and on.

Not all students walk through the school doors with all the same needs. I thought for years that teachers had it made. They get the summers off and every Holiday that comes down the pipeline.
