KY Afield Outdoors: Another productive deer season By Kevin Kelly Frankfort, KY - Kentucky receives national acclaim for the quality of its deer herd, and the numbers help draw the attention. The state has produced hundreds of trophy-class bucks over the past five seasons and hunters last season combined to take 138,899 deer overall. It was the second highest harvest total on record behind only the 2013-14 season. "I think this might be the new norm for a little bit," said Gabe Jenkins, deer and elk program coordinator for the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources. "It's also indicative of how many deer we have on the landscape." The 2015-16 deer season arrives Saturday, Sept. 5 with the start of the archery season, and the outlook points to another good season. Biologists say the herd is doing well and estimate it to number about 1 million at the outset. Gov. Beshear's Statement on Marriage Licenses in Rowan County "Judge Bunning's decision today speaks for itself. The future of the Rowan County Clerk continues to be a matter between her and the courts. Deputy clerks have said they will commence issuing marriage licenses beginning tomorrow. It appears that the citizens of Rowan County will now have access to all the services from the clerk's office to which they are entitled. "Again, the legislature has placed the authority to issue marriage licenses squarely on county clerks by statute, and I have no legal authority to relieve them of their statutory duty by executive order. "The General Assembly will convene in just four months and can make any statutory changes it deems necessary at that time. I see no need to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars of taxpayers' money calling a special session of the General Assembly when 117 of 120 county clerks are doing their jobs." - Gov. Steve Beshear, 3 Sep 2015, at Frankfort, KY. 2015-09-03 16:34:26 | Comments | Printable version

Billy Joe Fudge: Pahkasalo leap brings memory of Steve Walkup Comments re photo 61924 Aleksi Pahkasalo, Vantaa, Finland celebrates 2nd goal By Billy Joe Fudge I know there is the possibility of an optical "delusion" taking place in this photo but if all things are as they appear, Aleksi must have one heck of a vertical leap.
