Photo with full story

By Ofc.Josh Brockman
Columbia Police Department. Chief, Jason Cross

Columbia Police department officers recently completed a training on the MILO training simulator (multiple interactive learning objectives). The training equipment is provided by the Kentucky League of Cities to help enhance the training of officers who work under KLC representation.

Columbia Police have participated in the program for many years and Chief Cross has worked to secure Columbia as a host site for the training. We have had officers from Liberty, Russell, Jamestown, Burkesville, Albany and Greensburg in the past travel to Columbia for the training.

Putting it together: Haley Vittitow

A photo essay of one Lindsey Wilson College freshman's experience moving into her residence hall room

By Duane Bonifer

Lindsey Wilson College freshman Haley Vittitow of Shepherdsville, Ky., needed three weeks to pack for college.

But she and her parents, Keith and Sandy, needed only a little more than an hour to unpack and decorate her third-floor room of Phillips Hall. Vittitow decorated her room in a combination of store-bought merchandise as well items inspired by Pinterest.

Phillips Hall, part of which is 112 years old, is one of LWC's original buildings. Since its construction, it has been home to LWC female residential students.

CodeRED Weather Warning Service for Adair Co.

Important: To receive warning messages you must either update your enrollment online or call the Adair County 911 Center at 270-384-4760 during business hours.

by Mike Keltner

Columbia, KY - The Adair County Fiscal Court and the Adair County Emergency Management Agency have recently updated the account with Emergency Communications Network, providers of the CodeRED high-speed notification solution, to provide the CodeRED Weather Warning service for the community.

CodeRED Weather Warning is an opt-in only weather warning product that taps into the National Weather Service's Storm Based Warnings. CodeRED Weather Warning automatically alerts affected citizens in the path of severe weather just moments after a warning has been issued.

Calls are delivered so quickly they often arrive prior to any other public notifications, usually before television or weather radio broadcasts are aired, which will provide Adair County Residents extra time to prepare. Based on the National Weather Service's polygon methodology, only citizens in the path of projected weather are contacted.

KY-FI: No Project Fi day 1

This is the second of a multipart series about the use of Google's new Network of Networks in the wilds of Kentucky. Project Fi looks to be a homerun in big cities, where Sprint and TMobile have solid coverage. Tom reads the fine print and finds a reason to delay his activation, but things go well after a quick adjustment. Read the previous installment: KY-FI: Using Project Fi in the Bluegrass

By Tom Waggener

I jumped on the invite list as soon as I found out about Project Fi, and immediately started looking for a used Shamu... er, Nexus 6. I wasn't super excited about the biggest phablet on the market (more on that later) but I loved the idea of a multi carrier, super inexpensive phone that defaulted to wifi whenever possible.

Joyce Coomer: Are people trying to get rid of neighbors' dogs?

Comments on: Her child cries over missing Australian Shepherd dog

By Joyce M. Coomer
Personal commentary

I'm with Jo Ann Curry. For the past few years, I've been wondering if people are taking dogs for fighting or selling them to labs, esp. as some of the dogs that are listed as missing are small dogs that some labs like to use. Or just selling the dogs for easy money . . .

I also wonder about the dogs that are obviously someone's pet, as they are healthy and fat and wearing collars, being picked up and taken to the animal shelter - are people trying to get rid of their neighbors' dogs??? I've heard several people through the years, pet owners themselves, complain about another animal being on their property because it wasn't "their" animal. - Joyce M. Coomer

Dave Rosenbaum: Northern Adair Countians are more intellectual

A confession of a Southern Adair Countian

Dave Rosenbaum writes:
Most of my most useful education was taken around the coal stove in the rear of Dad's store at Fairplay. I heard of oil wells hit, gold mines found, huge fish caught, crops raised, timber cut, souls saved and ginseng dug. Nevertheless, not once did anyone ever appeal to Plutarch in order to press a argument. Hats off to Mr. Halsey. Come to think of it, those northern Adair County folks always seemed a bit more intellectual than us southerners. - Dave Rosenbaum
