Roger D Smith D.M.D., with more on: A Turn

Roger D Smith DMD writes:
Ed: I often went in the 50's to the mill (now M&W) with my GrandPa Sneed with a wagon full of corn that he called a "turn." I always understood that it would be turned into corn meal or turned into a trade for flour. Sometimes we would get it shelled for the animals. There was always a trade of raw product for services. I think it was just a term used for changing the raw product that was "turned" into a needed usable one. This "turn" was to barter instead of exchanging money. In this area we sometimes use shortened phrases or word meanings to suit our needs. Just my humble opinion. --Roger D Smith DMD

Pamela Farr: Working as kids made us better persons

Comments re article 76728 Granny Nannie Some advice to parents

By Pamela Farr
Personal Commentary

It is true that in small towns and communities, jobs are limited for teenagers. However, if only restaurant work, farm work, or clerking, these jobs should teach discipline, and good work ethics, being on time, to pay attention to details of their jobs, courteousness, and responsibility to themselves, and to take pride in what they do, however small or large the task is.

It doesn't hurt our teenagers to sweat a little, mow lawns - now that is a hot one - or take instructions from an employer.

When in the real world, they will need all of these in order to be a success.

We all want betterment for our children and grandchildren, but it didn't hurt us to take what some see as mediocre jobs, it made us to be a better person. --Pamela Farr

Dave Rosenbaum: Why was it called 'A Turn' of Corn?

Dave Rosenbaum writes:
For many years a grist mill was operated in a small building across the road (now KY 704) from my Dad's store. I recall it was operated by Simpson Wheat, Oscar Graves, Lorne Keith and others at various times. Folks would bring their corn on Saturdays and the miller would grind the corn for a price of ten cents or a small toll box of corn. The mill was driven by a large gasoline engine with a big belt running to the actual mill. Folks would bring their corn in a fabric sack and it would be referred to as a 'turn" of corn. I never knew why it was a "turn." Perhaps some of your readers or associates can tell me why it was a "turn" of corn. - Dave Rosenbaum
Thanks. I regret I don't have the answer, but such questions have long caused me many a sleepless night. Perhaps one of your other learned elders will know and enlighten us both. - EW

Letter: Need work they can be proud of

Carol Roberts writes:
The older kids of working age need jobs but this area has little to offer other than Walmart and restaurants. Apprentice and internship opportunities would also be helpful. Not all youth will attend college, but they all need work they can put their heart and soul into, work they can be proud of. - Carol Roberts

Sends thanks to all who made new intersection of KY 206/KY 55 happen

By Ralph Roy Waggener

I don't usually brag on anything the Kentucky State Hwy. Dept. does, but the design and work on the new intersection of 206 and 55 is well thought out and well done. With limited space and little to work with they have created the best possible for this very busy intersection. Thanks to all who made this happen, - Ralph Roy Waggener

Carol Perkins: The Annual Perkins Beach Party

The meet up in Panama City, FL was an equal drive from Edmonton, the capital of Metcalfe County, and their Texas kin. But an 80 mile 'shortcut' by Carol & Guy, through Foley, AL. to experience the two-hand catch of cathead sized throwed rolls, started a string of circumstances which were fodder for travel experiences that can only happen to Carol Sullivan Perkins.
Next previous column: Carol Perkins: Not a sip of milk since 1948

By Carol Perkins

Each year our family gathers at a beach house on the Gulf. For two years we have gone to Rosemary Beach near Panama City Beach, Florida. Five of us coming from the North turned a nine hour drive into a two day event. Jon's family, coming from Texas, drove straight through.

Even though we left a day earlier, we arrived only one hour ahead of them on Saturday. The reason for that was that on Saturday instead of heading for the house, which was only a three hour drive, we detoured through Foley, Alabama for the famous home of the "throwed rolls" at Lambert's Cafe. (one of three locations, if you're confused. The other two are the original in Sikeston and Ozark MO - CM)
