The Whitehurst Diaries: A Fine Catch

Click on headline for Diary Entry with photos

By Sharon Whitehurst

Jim and our neighbor, Jay Rose, spent Sunday evening fishing the big pond on our Pellyton property. Each hauled in a good-sized Large Mouth Bass. The occasion was rounded out with a demonstration of 'fillet' techniques by Jay; (several of our resident felines were fascinated by the process.) We've had fish for supper--dredged in a home made mix of flour, cornmeal and seasoning and fried to delicate crispness. We've given it a 'gourmet' rating.

Brief vignettes of Rev. I.M. (Pilgrim) Grimsley

A note: You probably already know that Rev. Grimsley was the father of Rucker Ples, grandfather of Ples T., and great-grandfather of Charles Grimsley, present day Columbia City Councilman and businessman and great father-in-law of Adair County Deputy Judge Executive Holly Grimsley.

By Jim

Rev. Isaac Meredith Grimsley, who generally went by I.M .and occasionally by the nickname Pilgrim, was a native of Overton County, Tennessee who removed from Green County (Ky.) to the Sano area in the very early years of the 20th century. His fame as a music teacher quickly grew and his name occasionally appeared in the News in connection with that. One correspondent provided a good glimpse in the McGaha newsletter published in the December 1, 1909 edition:

"Rev. IM Grimsley is teaching an interesting singing school at Oak Grove church. The people are so well satisfied with his instructions they employed him the second term. He is the best instructor that has visited us. He has won the respect of the community. They paid him more than they promised and gave him the best order that has been given to any one at that place for some time. We expect great benefits from the school."

Mount Pleasant Christian Church, a Brief History

This 'Mt. Pleasant Church' was destroyed by the 1971 Tornado. It was located just of Knifley Road, less than one-half mile toward town from Knifley Road's junction with Holmes Bend Road

Adair County Historian

There were several churches in Adair and surrounding counties, over the past two centuries, that bore the name Mount Pleasant. The following is a very short historical sketch of the Mount Pleasant Christian Church of Adair County.

About 1821 James Bailey deeded one acre of land for a church lot to the Baptists. A log house of worship was erected at some point thereafter. A decade later, the Baptist made a contract with the members of the local Christian Church. In return for a one-half interest in the building and lot, the new owners were to help to finish or remodel the building.

Mike Ellis: Agrees with Rickie Williams - turning lane needed

Rickie Williams has Change Order suggestion for KYTC

Mike Ellis writes:
I have talked this for years, I agree with Rickie. --Mike Ellis
Thanks, Mike Ellis: - "The Contact That Be," on this project tells CM that the lane turning lane is likely at some future date, but isn't in the cards for now. Maybe though, a "Go Ahead on Yellow" light, a variation of the KY Highway Department's overwhelmingly successful innovation at Jamestown Street and Russell Road, might be obtainable. Keep up the good lobbying. -EW

Vacation Bible Schools - at least six options today

If we've overlooked your VBS today, please let us know

School is out for another 52 days in Adair County today, and Vacation Bible Schools are filling the void, it seems. At least six area churches - Knifley Chapel Brethren in Christ, Faith General Baptist Church in Russell Springs, Purdy Separate Baptist Church on Liberty Road, Columbia; Bloomington Chapel in the Christine are of Adair County, and Beulah Chapel Church on Liberty Road in the Garlin/Vester area of Adair County - are holding Vacation Bible Schools this evening.

That's the one's we have listed in CM EVENTS on the Main Page today. If there's another Vacation Bible School in the CM 7-County Area - Adair, Casey, Cumberland, Metcalfe, Russell or Taylor Counties, which is not listed, please submit using any Contact/Submit button. We'll do our best to add it with a news story, listings on the Events Calendar, and a Daily Front page post in Events for the Day.
