Mount Pleasant Christian Church, a Brief History This 'Mt. Pleasant Church' was destroyed by the 1971 Tornado. It was located just of Knifley Road, less than one-half mile toward town from Knifley Road's junction with Holmes Bend Road Click on headline for complete story By Mike Watson Adair County Historian There were several churches in Adair and surrounding counties, over the past two centuries, that bore the name Mount Pleasant. The following is a very short historical sketch of the Mount Pleasant Christian Church of Adair County. About 1821 James Bailey deeded one acre of land for a church lot to the Baptists. A log house of worship was erected at some point thereafter. A decade later, the Baptist made a contract with the members of the local Christian Church. In return for a one-half interest in the building and lot, the new owners were to help to finish or remodel the building. Later, about 1852 or 1853, an additional one-quarter of the building and lot were granted to the Christian Church members in return for payment of three-fourths of the cost of constructing a new church building. The new structure was erected by William Townsend of Milltown, where the lumber was sawed, most likely at the Townsend Mill. The charter members of the Mount Pleasant Christian Church were: Thomas Edrington, Charity Smith, William Callison, Nancy Browning, John Dawson Steele, Mary Smith, Gilmore Callison, Abraham Sallee, Benjamin Edrington and Martha Callison. Early elders of the church were Job Sharp, Campbell Husk, Thomas Massie and Charles Massie. Early Deacons included: Nathan Smith and George Hancock. Some of the early pastors of the church were: John Dawson Steele, William Simpson, Richard W. Wallace, F.C. Shearer, Zachariah T. Williams, and many others followed.
