Rodney Burris comments on kynect

Comment above about: - kynect Special Enrollment Period ends

Rodney Burris writes:
I have been away from Columbia for years but still call it home and can keep up by reading your online magazine. I do have 1 question about this article Do you or anyone ever think about who is paying the bill to offer such a deal? I will tell you it's the hard working people of Kentucky whose rates are going through the roof to provide for the non producers as always. Thanks for allowing me to vent. - Rodney Burris
Thanks, Rodney - You're right about sky high rates, but that happened a long, long time before the Affordable Care Act. It was really frightening during the period after Blue Cross Blue Shield management took the then mutual (policy holder owned) Blue Cross/Blue Shield private. Management got rich. We policy holders saw our rates go through the roof. -EW

The apprenticeship program through the Lake Cumberland Area Technology Center and Dr. Schneider Automotive systems is very exciting for Adair County High School and the community. As we are moving into the third year of the Race To The Top-District grant, the focus of college and career readiness is shifting to life ready skills. Job shadowing opportunities, apprenticeships, internships, and capstone projects are being looked at closely with hopes of expanding those opportunities to all of the Kid-Friendly districts participating in Race to the Top. Our work will center around matching kids with opportunities that fit with their long range plans as we move forward.

Click on headline for complete story, details

By Ed Waggener

The Columbia Adair Utilities hired Damon Talley, a member of the law firm Stoll, Keenon Ogden, to represent the utility in certain certain litigation situations and possible litigation facing CAUD. Mr. Talley is the attorney who guided the merger of the old Columbia Utilities water and sewer department merger with the Adair County Water District, the entities which now make up Columbia/Adair County Utilities district. The vote to hire Mr. Talley came at the utilities board's regular Thursday, 14 May 2015 meeting, to hire the second attorney came on the recommendation of CAUD attorney Marshall Loy, General Manager Lenny Stone, and Chairman Tim Baker. The vote to hire him was unanimous, with Baker and members Barry Stotts, Larry Russell Bryant, David Jones and Mike Newton affirming.

Though much of Mr. Talley's work is shrouded in Executive Sessions, it is believed that it has to do with the abrupt change of Engineering Firms and a surprise rescinding of a contract with Stotts Construction Company. In the opening meeting, Mr. Talley said that he would be performing legal work which Marshall Loy couldn't do or wouldn't do. Mr. Talley, a resident of Hodgenville, KY, is a member of the law firm Stoll- Keenon-Ogden. Offices are in Lexington and Louisville and now, at Mr. Talley's longtime office at 112 N Lincoln Blvd, Hodgenville, KY.Mr. Talley's hourly fee, he told the CAUD Board of Trustees at its May 14, 2015 meeting, is $330.00 per hour.

kynect Special Enrollment Period ends

More than 3,000 additional Kentuckians signed up for private health insurance coverage during the special enrollment period.

By: Kerri Richardson/Terry Sebastian

FRANKFORT, Ky. - Governor Steve Beshear today announced that an additional 3,047 Kentuckians signed up for quality, affordable health coverage during a special enrollment period that ran from March 2 through April 30 to give Kentuckians unaware of possible tax penalties for the uninsured more time to sign up.

"Our second open enrollment period was extremely successful, with many new individuals signing up or continuing their health coverage through kynect," said Gov. Beshear. "However, we knew there were Kentuckians who did not realize that if they do not obtain health coverage they may face significant penalties when they file their taxes. Given that the personal risks of not having health coverage are even greater than the penalties, we decided to continue a special enrollment period to allow those individuals more time to sign up. I'm pleased that the extra time allowed more than 3,000 Kentuckians to join the more than 100,000 who enrolled in private health coverage through kynect for 2015."

Sen. Max Wise: Reflections on Memorial Day

'Here in Kentucky, we have a unique and rich history in military service to the U.S. dating back to the War of 1812, and we continue to have many sons and daughters volunteer to defend our nation. In most of our communities across the state, there are statues and memorials dedicated to those who sacrificed their lives.' - MAX WISE
Memorial Day is observed this year on Monday, May 25, 2015

By State Senator Max Wise (KY S-16)

Frankfort, KY - Memorial Day is significant in Kentucky as it brings in the unofficial beginning of summer with schools nearing the end of the semester, vacationers descending in droves to our lakes and rivers, and warm weather and sunshine becoming the norm. The holiday also is a day on which many of us remember our loved ones who have died. We take flowers to the graves of relatives, and often travel to our hometown for reunions and visits with old friends and family.

Jim: Big doin's in Columbia, mid-May, 1915

One hundred years ago in Adair County, society and school items dominated the news, politicians were out in earnest, and the dangerous life facing pedestrians had begun - as pedestrians dodged Tin Lizzies

By Jim

Had Marty Stuart been in Columbia about a hundred years ago, no doubt any number of the denizens of the Square would have heard him exclaiming, "Big doin's in town this week, big doin's!"

And big doin's there were, as reported in the May 19, 1915 edition of the Adair County News.

Ben Arnold: Old Egypt School exactly like Egypt

Ben Arnold writes to George Rice:
George, Thank you George for these oh so familiar stories. My mom and dad had their first date at that Jericho church and your school is exactly like out Egypt one room school down to the grape vine swing, outhouses, etc. I can smell the chalk board, wood stove, and taste the lemonade in the bucket. We must ask Mike Morris to write a similar dissertation on the Egypt school. --Ben Arnold

Happy Tail: The dog who cried 'Wolf' - Darryl

How the wily Darryl tricked Peg into a trip to Greensburg and McDonald's and a favorite food - sausage from HER Sausage and Biscuit, and has her worried that his little buddy, Duke, will learns his tricks.
Next Previous Happy Tail: Happy Tail - Spanky, the red-nose pit bull

By Peg Schaeffer

Everyone who knows me knows Darryl. I've written a Happy Tail about my Beagle that has been more places than most people - most of them uninvited. So the other day when I thought he was sick I was very concerned.

Darryl is always by my side. If he's not in trouble he's laying by my feet while I'm at the computer, sitting by my chair at the table looking for some treats, or riding in the truck waiting for me to open the door so he can jump out (even if he's supposed to stay in). The other day he kept whimpering as if he was hurt. He came downstairs with me and lay on the Kuranda bed but whenever he moved he would cry out. He wasn't his usual active self.

Poetry by Billy Joe Fudge: the Stone and Goat Limerick

The Stone and Goat Limerick
by the poet, Billy Joe Fudge
There is a man whose friend is a goat.
Over the other, they both would gloat.

When one of them would butt
The other in the butt

They would find both head and rump were broke.

"It's Not That We Forgot.... We Never Knew"

One of the delights of running a bookstore is the occasional customer who comes in looking for something I've never heard of — and together we find it.

Such is the case with this 2001 volume by Western Kentucky University historian Carlton Jackson [University of Oklahoma Press].

Jackson documents a terrible secret tragedy of World War II in his Allied Secret: The Sinking of HMT "Rohna". This book is an updated edition of an earlier work, Forgotten Tragedy published some five years previously.
