Rumble strips. Yes, if they are 4-6 inches high

But he agrees with Kellis Booth. It's careless driving

George Rice writes:
I'm in total agreement with Kellis Booth that there are no apparent reason for all the accidents at this intersection except careless drivers. Rumble strips might help, provided they are four or six inches high. That would get their attention. - George Rice

A pasta-ossom, up in a tree, ready to pounce on you

2015-04-19 - Shelby County, KY - Photo By Pen.
And this is the picture Pen showed Hailey, and inadvertently planted a new worry in her mind, of the pasta-ossoms which live outside her door. The photographer does not note whether this one is a jack or a jill, or if one gender is scarier than the other.

Hailey learns about scarey things in the night

Pasta-ossoms, the displacement night monsters, have proven more compelling and dreadful than the wolves she had feared were threats in her backyard

By Granddad

Hailey is just learning and asking about things in the night.

Just a few days ago, her concern was one we all have. She wanted to know about the wolfses outside at night in her backyard.

Her Dad told her there weren't any wolves, that the scariest things out there were opossums - or maybe a potato monster.

Heather Evans: Rumble strips and lower speed, if that will help

But it boils down to drivers needing to pay attention

Heather Evans writes:
If rumble strips or slower speed limits will prevent accidents then by all means install them. But this time a resident caused the accident and not an out of towner. What this boils down to is simply pay attention to driving!!! It's not the bypass, it's the drivers looking at their gps, changing the radio, talking on their cell or lighting a cigarette. Try strictly driving and pay attention to what's in front of you. - Heather Evans

The Bypass safety issue: What really can be done?

Personal commentary

Kellis Booth writes:
I can see the lights on the bypass from a mile away so I'm not sure what else can be done to make that intersection more safe. The problem is that people are running red lights. No extra light, speed bump or even tire spike can stop someone from breaking the law. It's a terrible thing but it's the truth. What really can be done? I don't feel it fair to blame the city or for someone to dare claim negligence on the dept of transportation. - Kellis Booth

Carol Perkins: The Cruise Part II

Read Part I here: Carol Perkins Setting Sail

By: Carol Perkins

Getting through the check-in meant waiting in lines, filling out new forms, and being ready to hand over a credit card and passport. I had all of Connie's information except those two, and when we were checking in she couldn't find her little zip bag that contained both. After taking everything out of her pockets and backpack, she found it stuck into the pocket of her pants. The others were waiting for us on deck at the "picture" taking place with two fake sailors smiling like baffons. This is another way of making money for the cruise line because most people go wild about pictures of themselves. We bought ZERO pictures.

Letter: Another accident on bypass

Jean George writes:
My nephew lost his mom in the accident in March that took three lives, here it is not even a month later and yet another accident. When will a change come, does it take more people to die to be change? If more folks raise cane then maybe we could prevent another life from being lost. I'm tired of living in fear, I am scared to even take the bypass. I'm sick of knowing my nephew lost his momma due to no changes being made when numerous accidents have taken place. I beg my voice to be heard. We need something done. No child should have to lose their parents to our negligence. --Jean George

George Rice/History - The log dump from Jericho Cliff

There's no historical marker along the Jericho Cliffs on Corbin Bend Road above Green River Lake to tell about this significant geography of Adair County. Today it's a scenic roadway with views along the way of the lake and boats and Holmes Bend Road. The story is not about anything which happened in the writer's lifetime, but stories his father told him, and evidence of the early days of timber harvest stirred his interest to write another of his very compelling stories.

Got Christine out of the house for a Sunday Drive Friday afternoon.

Drove down to Holmes Bend Boat Dock back to and along Corbin Bend Road and stopped along the Jericho Cliff to take this picture from the site of the log dump used many years ago.

Looking upstream from this point, the body of water up to the boat dock covers what was the George Rice Sr. farm.

Happy Tail: Wally, the dog who could jump like a deer

There's a special concern among pet owners for proper places burial places for their pets. Adair County CJE Mike Stephens has shared a dream of adding a pet cemetery for Adair County, likely in conjunction with the Green River Animal Shelter. There has be interest from private groups, too. For now, though, pet owners are improvising with unique places to enshrine their pets. This is a story of one of those special places for a very special dog, Wally, short for Wallaby, who could jump like a deer. Peg Schaeffer remembers him each time she's working in the garden, near his final resting place, "Wallaby Crossing." - EW

There have been a lot of dogs in my life and they all have a special place in my heart. Some have an even bigger place in my heart and an Australian Cattle Dog named Wallaby, aka "Wally" was one of them.

And Finally, Spring

I think spring is here to stay for its usual brief visit.

For a while, it seemed it would never come. This year more than most it toyed with us. February, not April, is the cruelest month. Also the longest.
