Guy Babin thanks Billy Joe Fudge

Reflections on finding daffodils growing wild on Bennett Ridge Road, and learning from yet another Adair Countian, that around here, they are properly called March lilies
Comments re article 74172 Billy Fudge On the name March Lilies vs Daffodils

By Guy Babin

I must come clean and must publically confess my failure to properly enculturate.

Just today as I traveled from Tony Scott's farm on Bennett Ridge Road riding in the truck with his father in law Glen Posy, his son Conner and Charles the wonder dog, I asked if daffodils really do grow wild in our neck of the Kentucky hills. Mr. Glenn assured me they do, but that they are more properly referred to as March lilies. I was a skeptic thinking lilies were a different flora altogether . . .

EVERY word has a history. Names of plants may tell about the plant. "Daffodil" is the common name of the flowers that fall into the Genus "Narcissus."

Commentary: On Rescue Dogs

Mitzi Bault writes:
I have always been an animal lover all my life. I have 3 rescue dogs now. But I do not understand. We have dogs at the shelter that stay so long their time runs out. If these dogs are so out of hand, no one needs them. Who would take them? Most likely it would be someone that fights them. You would not have them for a family pet. When the Vet took some of them, was it asked if it was as a volunteer or for pay? The money that is needed for the Vet bill could have gone a long way for other dogs or supplies. It is not about the breed. Ricky and I had a pit bull for 12 years, and it was a great dog. --Mitzi Bault

Billy Fudge: On the name - March Lilies vs Daffodils

Great Wooded South Poll is in, "political correctness is out. Only 3 percent of locals + those from off refer to March Lilies as "Daffodils."

By Billy Joe Fudge, Dean
Great Wooded South University's School of Vernacular Authenticity

As we all know "political correctness" has run amuck and in the process has robbed us of many of our most cherished and I might add, innocent traditions. However, in order to not offend those with loose, sandy, shakable foundations and in the spirit of "political correctness", I will not reach into the inner darkness and bring any specific examples into the light of day although there are many at play.

Report to the people: GRAS had busy, good week!

Cleanliness and sprucing up, are top priorities at Green River Animal Shelter in the transformation of the ongoing improvements at the facility, initiated by Magistrates Daryl Flatt and Sammy Baker, and given a powerful absolutely essential impetus by Adair County CJE Mike Stephens. It's now a very pleasant place to visit and see the potential it has. Saturdays, 10am-2pmCT are great times to take the family for a visit they'll never forget - and maybe spot an opportunity to pitch in and help out. Volunteers are important. - CM
And don't forget, the $50 adoption fee Special is still in effect, officially until March 31, 2015. We'll report as soon as we know whether it will be extended or changed.

By Kim Sallee, Director Green River Animal Shelter

Another very busy week at Green River Animal Shelter and that's the way we like it!

Lots of dogs (especially puppies) have found new homes and we want to thank everyone for considering a shelter pet.

We also want to thank everyone that has stopped in to say hello, and who also has donated money, cleaning supplies, dog/cat food and bedding. You have no idea how much we appreciate it and we definitely put it to good use.

Kentucky Color: My Favorite Color - Yellow

By Billy Joe Fudge, Retired District Forester
Kentucky Division of Forestry

March Lilies can come in nuances of yellow from a pale which is almost white to a dark which is almost gold.

All the colors are beautiful but to quote the late Marian McPartland of NPR's Piano Jazz, yellow is "my favorite".

I might be proven wrong but I suggest that the yellow like this one is the original or vintage March Lily. I'm kinda partial to vintage plants. That could be because I've spent a major portion of my life among the "natives", so to speak.
