Robert Cumming: Bass Weejuns a sign you were from KY

Robert Cumming writes:
Wearing Bass Weejuns made a huge fashion statement in Kentucky in the 1960's. I once heard so many Weejuns were sold in KY that many residents wearing them out of state could be recognized as being from KY simply by looking at their shoes! BTW I still have a like - new pair of $26 Oxblood Weejuns in the original box circa 1969 from Foster Picketts Shoe store in Russell Springs. - Robert Cumming

Carol Perkins: 1966- When Bass Weejuns were the rage

A memory many 60s people remember - when most shoes needed to be "broken in" which worked on most inexpensive brands, but not Bass Weejuns!
Click on headline for complete column. Scroll to end of column for links to read previous columns

By Carol Perkins

In 1966, Bass Weejuns were the rage among college students. Because they were very expensive, only the "money" kids could afford them. I was not a "money kid." I look back now and realize that they may not have had much money either, but they were wearing Weejuns and I wasn't and I wanted a pair.

I would never have asked for the money to buy the Weejuns because back in those days keeping a student in college was expensive-more so than now because most scholarships were given to athletes. I never knew anyone going on an academic scholarship back then. I wouldn't have been a recipient anyway! Back to the shoes . . .

"Down these mean streets. . . ."

In 1950 Raymond Chandler defined the hardboiled detective genre, according to critic Terry D'Aury. "Down these mean streets must go a man who is not himself mean. . . ."

I have just finished reading one of my favorite hardboiled detective writers whose main character is not really a detective like Sam Spade, but who sets out down the mean streets to right wrongs.
