Mike Watson finds Mt. Tussell Road may be named for school

Newly revealed information adds another level of knowledge and another conundrum: There was a Mt. Tussell School, which may have been the basis for the name "Mt. Tussell Road". If that is so, where's the Mt. Tussell the school was named for? These are interesting times we live in, wrestling with the Great Questions of the Day. Some of us are not sleeping well, restless for the answer, one which would try the Great Minds of the Ages: Dr. Billy Neat, J.R.Tolkien, Pete Walker, even J.K Rowling. We agree with Mike Watson: Wandering . . . err . . . Wondering Minds Want to Know . . .

By Mike Watson
Adair County Historian

We know where Mt. or Mount Tussell Road is located in Adair County. However, the name comes from the school, Mount Tussell. I do not know where the school's location was, but would like to hear from an reader who can pinpoint it. Like the site of Elroy, which Billy Joe Fudge, definitely located, these things should be documented for those who wonder...and wander.

I do not find record of when Mount Tussell was first established as a school, but certainly prior to 1908 when Rev. Leslie Bottom was preaching second Sunday services there, with first Sunday at Roley. There was need for a new building to be constructed in 1919, but had not materialized by 1920 when Superintendent Noah Loy called for bids. Mt. Tussell is on the list of county schools as late as 1950, but I do not have information on when it closed, certainly by the time the new Knifley Grade Center was opened.

Wandering...err...Wondering Minds Want to Know... - MIKE

Adair County Schools will have missed 8 snow days after today

Next big decision for schools: How to change the School Calendar to make up for lost weather days, build a contingency cushion for possible springtime cancellations later in spring.

School Districts in the area will be coping with making up snow days in a big way this year. With today's cancellation of classes, Superintendent Allen Reed said, Adair County will have missed eight days of school. That's not one week and one day. In school terms, it is two days short of two weeks.

Today's cancellation may or may not be the end of weather cancellations.
