Final section of project to connect bypass with both I-65, WK Parkway

By Kerri Richardson and Terry Sebastian
News from Governor Steve Beshear's Communications Office

ELIZABETHTOWN, Ky. - Governor Steve Beshear today presented a ceremonial check representing preconstruction funding for a project long sought by leaders in Elizabethtown and Hardin County - the final extension of Ring Road to create a badly needed bypass around Elizabethtown.

"Our transportation system is a key to the economic well-being of our entire Commonwealth," Gov. Beshear said. "But that system is much more than interstate highways and bridges over mighty rivers. At the community level, it's the local streets and roads and connectors like Ring Road that support the life and commerce of the community."

Comment on derivation of name of Stanford, KY

Vonnie Kolbenschlag writes:
Is the name of HWY 206 not "Sanford" but "Stanford"? (Ans: Yes, of course. That typo is now corrected. - EW)

As a short form of Standing Fort that Logan built as one of the earliest in Kentucky.

Dan Trabue and his brother had the job of supplying early forts with food, ammunition and letters from Virginia. Logan's Fort was one of the largest. From Logan's fort, Col. Casey, a brother-in-law, migrated to this area and built his fort. Logan and Casey were married to Montgomery sisters, women who endured living in forts and raising children in this frontier settlement. - Vonnie Kolbenschlag

Edit tidbit reminds of importance of Russell family in Adair Co.

Comments re photo 57291: Mr Richard Phelps as JO Russell 18561928 JIM writes:
Ed, I think you mean John Orion Russell instead of James Orion. (John had a brother James who, among other things, served as Columbia postmaster for a few years in the early 1900s.) - JIM
Jim, thanks. You are right, of course, the change has been made on the photo of Mr. Richard Phelps. Thanks for bringing the memory of the postmaster James Russell to light. I've always wonder if there is a history of the Columbia Post Office anywhere. I don't want to see the memory of the "HyPO" the mail sorting bus which used to bring the mail from Louisville all the way down to Burkesville, KY. Looking back, it was a Duckbill Platypus of Postal Deliveries. Don't know if anything similar is still in existence on planes, trains or busses, but sometimes an old answer is best. - CM
