Bessie Meece, 79, Russell Co., KY (1935-2014)

She was native of Russell County, KY, and a resident of the county at the time of her death. She was the daughter of the late Hughie & Ida Mae Hart Wilson and the widow of Clifford Gene Meece. She She leaves 12 direct living descendants. She was God Mother to three. She was a devout Christian, a homemaker and a member of the Salem United Baptist Church.

Funeral service for Bessie Meece will be at 2pmCT, Sunday, June 29, 2014, at the Bernard Funeral Home Chapel, 367 N Main Street, Russell Springs, KY, with Bro. Larold Gosser and Bro. Ted Stidham officiating. Visitation will be after 5pmCT, Saturday, June 28, 2014, at the funeral home. Burial will be in the New Friendship Cemetery. Special music by the Heirs by Grace.

Buford L. Johnson, 83, Adair Co., KY native (1931-2014)

He was a native of Adair County, KY, and was a resident of Jefferson County, KY, at the time of his death. He was a member of a highly regarded family with strong ties here, including a son Johnny Jones, and his wife Shirley of Columbia, KY. He leaves 13 direct living descendants. He was an Army veteran and a member of Joshua Tabernacle Baptist church.

Visitation will be at 9amCT/10amET, Saturday until funeral services at 10amCT/11amET, at G.C. Williams Funeral Home, 1935 W. Broadway Louisville, KY. Burial will be in Kentucky Veterans Cemetery, on Monday, July 30, 2014.

Troublesome weed, Palmer Amaranth, shows up in Adair Co., KY

Plant's presence can reduce yields of soybeans as much as 79%

Palmer Amaranth is a troublesome weed that has been in western Kentucky for several years and as of this week, its presence has been confirmed in Adair County. Palmer Amaranth is resistant to glyphosate and can pose major problems in soybean fields. A warm season annual, individual Palmer Amaranth plants can produce up to a half a million new seeds when not faced with competition. Palmer Amaranth can grow up to 2-3 inches per day reaching a height of 6 feet or more. Higher populations of this weed has been found to reduce yield in soybeans by as high as 79%.

The Columbia-Adair County Chamber of Commerce held a ribbon cutting ceremony Friday, June 27, 2014, at 11amCT, as a part of the Grand Opening of Farm 2 Furniture located at 119 Jamestown Street, in Columbia, KY. Owners are Danny and Darlene Reeves. The Reeves takes items that are normally destroyed such as old barns/ houses/bricks, etc. and turns them into a "work of art" by making beautiful furniture and home accessories. A variety of antiques and hard to find items are beautifully displayed which can be enjoyed by the public. By using their talents, the Reeves are helping to make for a better environment and a more attractive landscape. - SUE STIVERS, Executive Director, Columbia/Adair County Chamber of Commerce.

At 8:01amET, Friday morning, Somerset Police Officers responded to a shooting in downtown Somerset on West Mt. Vernon Street, behind the Pulaski County Courthouse.

The calls came in when a Pulaski County Sheriff's Detective and several other people witnessed Clinton D. Inabnitt, age 40, of Somerset, shoot Somerset Attorney Mark Stanziano, age 57, outside Stanziano's law office at 207 West Mt. Vernon Street. Stanziano was shot multiple times. The sheriff's detective was able to approach Inabnitt and take him into custody.

Details are sketchy, but it has been confirmed that Columbia Attorney Mark J. Stanziano, of the law firm of Stanziano & Stanziano has been murdered in Somerset, KY, this morning near his Somerset law office. Pulaski County authorities say Stanziano was hit by six rounds. One person is already in custody. We'll be following this story closely and will have details on the radio and at ColumbiaMagazine.com as additional information is learned. - Larry Smith

FRANKFORT, KY (June 26, 2014) Unemployment rates fell in 103 Kentucky counties between May 2013 and May 2014, while 11 county rates went up and six counties stayed the same, according to the Kentucky Office of Employment and Training, an agency of the Kentucky Education and Workforce Development Cabinet.

We'll be here 6am-10amCT, or until everything is sold (there were green tomatoes, but someone came and bought them all, already.) The earlier you come the better, and the weather is perfect right now. Here's what we have at this time:
  • Holly Kerns, Sano, KY 270-250-3437 - Yellow Squash, Zucchini, Green Beans, Cucumbers, Red Potatoes, White Potatoes (Blue Potatoes not ready yet - maybe by Fourth of July, though) and Cabbage
  • Danny and Debbie Burris, D & D Longview Farm, Gradyville, KY, 270-250-3701 - Blue Crop Green Beans, Old Time Brown Stick Beans, Roma Beans, Crook Neck Yellow Squash, and Berries! We have the berries! Blackberries, Gooseberries, Blue Berries. Also Cukes, Zucchini, New Potatoes, a few Little Red Beets, Green Onions. Tomatoes: We have a lot of Red Tomatoes. (We came with a pretty good selection of Green Tomatoes, but someone came by and bought us out! Apologies). And, a note, we won't be able to make the Farmers Market on the Square tomorrow, so we hope to see everyone here, today.

Attorney General Jack Conway today announced that a Boyle County man has been arrested for allegedly possessing child pornography. Mark Morris, 52, was arrested at his Danville home by General Conway's Cybercrimes Unit on June 25. He was charged with one count of possession of matter portraying a sexual performance by a minor and two counts of distribution of matter portraying a sexual performance by a minor.

FRANKFORT, KY - With the Fourth of July falling on a Friday this year, Kentucky's lakes and rivers will be teeming with boaters enjoying the long holiday weekend. Officials with the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources want it to be a fun and safe experience for everyone.

"There's nothing better than a day on the water," said Zac Campbell, the department's boating education coordinator. "It's a great way to spend quality time with your family and friends. But a great day on the water can turn tragic in a matter of seconds.

FRANKFORT, KY - The Kentucky Tourism Development Finance Authority today approved incentives for two projects - a distillery visitor center in Loretto, and a hotel development in Paducah.

Maker's Mark Distillery received approval for a new $2.03 million welcome center, which will also feature food services and expanded parking.

Mr. Fred Serra, Jr., Glasgow, KY (1939-2014)

He was a member of Bethel Baptist Church. He was a Korean and Vietnam War Veteran of the U. S. Army and Navy. He was a member of the Cumberland County Masonic Lodge and a lifelong police officer. He was a member of the Military Police, a sheriff in Maryland and an officer in the surrounding areas of Burkesville, Glasgow and Cave City Police Departments, having served as an officer of the Glasgow Police Department since 1978 and attaining the rank of captain after twenty-five years of service. He was devoted to his family. His greatest joys in life were his children and grandchildren.

Mr. Fred Serra, Jr., age 75, of Glasgow, Kentucky, formerly of Burkesville, Kentucky, passed away on Tuesday, June 24, 2014 at the Medical Center in Bowling Green, Kentucky.

Funeral Services will be conducted on Saturday, June 28, 2014 at 2pmCT, at the Bethel Baptist Church, 109 Kentucky Street, Glasgow, Kentucky with Bro. Ricky Proffitt officiating. Burial will be in the Glasgow Municipal Cemetery, 303 Leslie Avenue, Glasgow, Kentucky. The family will receive friends after 1pmCT, on Friday, June 27, 2014 until 8amCT, on Saturday, June 28, 2014 at Norris-New Funeral Home, 601 North Main Street in Burkesville, Kentucky. The body will lie in state at Bethel Baptist Church, 109 Kentucky Street, Glasgow, Kentucky after 10amCT, Saturday, June 28, 2014 until the funeral hour at 2pmCT.
