With weather changes, check for cats before starting vehicle

By Joyce Coomer

With the weather currently being changeable, cats will tend to sit on tires and frames of vehicles to keep their feet dry. Please, please, please look for your cats BEFORE starting your vehicles, and if you feed your cats near a vehicle, please feed them immediately before you get in the vehicle to leave. Blow the horn BEFORE starting the engine. Peck on the fenders. Look at the tires. Look under the vehicle. It breaks my heart to see once purring bodies lying on the road. - Joyce M. Coomer, 270-384-4495

Thanks to JIM for great writing and help on genealogy

Linda Waggener writes to JIM:
Dear writer JIM, please pretend I'm sending you the required "... fifty cents and a fifth of Old Tonguewagger..." and give me more on your opinion. Could Sallie Marcum have been a relative of my most beloved friend and mentor, the late Mary Marshall Marcum Paul Todd of Columbia? Marshall Todd, retired teacher, adopted me right after I landed in Columbia from far away Metcalfe County when I put my name on an article in the Adair County News because she and I shared the name "Marcum," We never established if we were kin, didn\t need to because we knew we were sisters in the shared love of the written word. Marshall would say, "you have to write more!" and I would write more every chance I got with her encouragement and later some good English training by Dr. Loretta Martin Murray at the Glasgow WKU campus. Now I catch myself thanking contributors to Ed's "little paper" as everyone calls Columbiamagazine.com, and I'm encouraging others to "write more!" I'm so glad you wrote this and please keep it up . . . WM&M! Linda Marcum Waggener

Challenges COF to open mind, broaden experience

The COF & His Coffee Controversy: Thinks cafe downtown Columbia should have taste testing to open mind and tastes of people. (A new Trailtown USA idea? - A Progressive Coffee sampling tour?- CM)

Maury Lewis writes:
I like coffee most any way you can imagine. Hot, Cold, Black, with Cream, flavored. It is just a great base for all kinds of great drinks. I am not one of those that has to have a cup or several cups of coffee to get me going in the morning. My heavenly Father does that for me. I just like a good cup of coffee or maybe even a great glass of coffee any time of the day. I challenge COF that thinks just black or served with just cream to try something new today. Maybe the café downtown can have a taste testing to open the mind and taste of people. melewi in beautiful Joppa - Maury

Chas. Marshburn comments on COF and his coffee issue

Comments re article 66039 Epicurean COF Best choose one or tother and stick with it

Charles Marshburn writes:
Sounds like the man had rather have his catfish fried rather than blackened and his okra fried rather than pickled! Surely he doesn't eat bologna for breakfast along with a biscuit with chocolate gravy! -Charles Marshburn
Thanks Mr. Marshburn We don't know the culinary habits of the COF - just that he is a man of rare gentile refinement and elegant manners; we'd suspect his diet is Mediterranean in all respects, and that, yes, his catfish isn't sissified, he or his servants fry his okra, and of course he'd have proper breakfast of fried bologna and a dessert of crumbled biscuit and chocolate gravy - almost every morning when he isn't eating eggs benedict. Up at Knifley, good manners dictate that does not comment on another's diet. Can invite serious repercussions - something as dire as an arm wrestling contest to settle the insult, once and for all, for instance. If a body prefers the Reagan vegetable, tomato catchup - even on lemon pie - that's a body's own business. - ED WAGGENER

I was hoping you could put some pictures and his and our info up on CM to ensure the speedy return of our dog. His name is Frasier, he's a full-blooded Chocolate Lab, probably between 60-80 lbs. He's all brown with a white splotch on his chest and stomach, and gold eyes. He's young, approximately. 8 months old. Contact us at: 1-270-432-2847 or 1-270-261-1443

With good care, cats now living longer, happier lives

Vicky Pike's cat lived to be 20 years old, Tami Wilson notes in this comment on the good news that Max the Manx is settling in, in his middle age at 8, in a good new home

Tami Wilson writes:
As a "cat person." I'm also so happy that Max has a good home to go to. Eight years is really just younger middle age for a cat, these days, since the average age for a cat's lifespan has increased over the years, especially for indoor cats who are fed good quality food and get vet care when necessary. I've had a cat live to be 17, and friends, including Vicky Pike, have had cats live into their late teens and early 20s. I hope Max has a healthy and happy life ahead. - Tami Wilson
Comments re article 66025 Happy Ending Loving home found for Max the Manx Cat. And a note: Thanks, Tami Wilson. CM has been shamefully short of cat pictures, and cats and kittens for adoption. And cat anecdotes. We appreciate your sharing this note. And - by the way - I'm wondering what most often cuts a cat's life short. A quick guess: motor vehicles. - ED
