That Big Tree story: James Murrell suspects it was true

Even though the proportions mentioned are Bunyanesque, research indicates that timber in this area then was huge. And according to no less a forest authority than Billy Joe Fudge that even today some quite huge sycamores remain, particularly around the tributaries of Russell Creek. Sometimes, as in this case which had even Mike Watson wondering - the truth is more fantastic than fiction.

By James Murrell
A most remarkable Adair Countian's grandson

I suspect that this story was very much a true one, My Grandfather Deering Fletcher, who spent almost his entire life living and farming in the Chance, Greenbriar Ridge and Breeding areas, once showed me some old photos of him and six other grown men standing on a Chestnut stump in the logging woods of those areas.

Epicurean Kentuckian: Sandwich restores her faith in humanity

The Bacon & Tomato on Grilled Cheese. Tomato: Heirloom from Bruce Wilson's Garden
'Yes, tomatoes are a gift from God! Organically grown, heirloom varieties are highly encouraged. You usually don't get perfect-looking red balls, but that IS the perfection of them- they were not bred in a lab, designed to be shipped to groceries. They are lop-sided, tender, and bruise easily, but they are SO delicious.' - TAMI WILSON

By Tami Wilson

Re: bacon and tomato on grilled cheese:

Yes, I've also been eating haloumi cheese, aka "grilling cheese." I slice it into strips about a quarter-inch thick, then put them in a cast-iron skillet heated with a thin coat of oil. It "grills" directly on the surface of the pan, and develops a golden, caramelized crust on the cheese itself.
