Maury Lewis proposes Paint Your Heart Out days for Square Maury Lewis writes: I would like to just see some fresh paint used on some of the buildings on the Square and maybe some large planters of flowers placed on the concrete pieces that are around the Square. And there is one business that has a frame for a canopy over the window but the canopy is not in very good shape the last time I looked at it. Paint and flowers go along way in making things look beautiful. We could get a group together and have a few Paint Your Heart Out days to freshen up our town. melewi --Maury LewisComments re article 60863: Mike Watson Of old buildings eyesores and history 2013-07-24 12:22:46 | Comments | Printable version

Historic Adair Co. Courthouse through the eyes of a child By Ernestine Bennett I have been reading about the different opinions of the buildings on the square. I want to share what our 3 year old grandson Elijah, who lives close to Cincinnati told me about the courthouse. He was riding with his Pa and Gran Gran , as we came upon the square he said "Wow, look at that castle!" I thought that was so sweet, a view of our beautiful courthouse from a child's eyes. --Ernestine Bennett 2013-07-24 09:33:21 | Comments | Printable version

Mike Watson: Of old buildings, eye-sores, and history... We are drawn to our past, let us live alongside it, in peace with it. - Mike Watson "We shape our buildings; thereafter, they shape us." - Winston Churchill By Mike Watson, Adair County Historian Commentary with a CM heartfelt 'Amen and Amen' Progress is important for a community and a people to grow and evolve into a bigger and better civil entity. Let me be first, or second, in line to advocate a beautiful Columbia and Adair County. An eye-sore to one is not necessarily one to another. A dangerous structure is just that, dangerous. However, in some cases, run-down is not dangerous; nor, for that matter, is new and improved necessarily safe. Renovation, beautification and, thus, resurrection, is more often the remedy, though it may not be done as inexpensively as bulldozing and dynamiting. Sitting Trees - a thought to bring back a lot of memories By Maury Lewis We have several sitting trees in our yard and we had a visitor come over yesterday and he picked out a sitting tree to use as a place to play games on his brother's iPad. It was Master Jamason Staten and he picked this tree out himself. His brother Chandler Staton has one that is a lot higher than Jamason's. We enjoyed having them over to eat homemade corn dogs. - Maury Lewis Thanks Maury Lewis: Brings back memories of English Mulberries which lined our fence line, and were easy to climb. Sitting in trees (not ot be confused with "Tree Sitting," a form of protest) sure could clear the mind. - EW 2013-07-24 07:32:13 | Comments | Printable version
