Annual Women's Methodist Conference held at LWC Mission U By Duane Bonifer News from Lindsey Wilson College COLUMBIA, KY - It was a new name but the same good work was done last week at Lindsey Wilson College. For more than a decade, Mission U. - formerly known as School of Christian Mission for the Women's Division of The United Methodist Church -- has held its annual four-day meeting on LWC's A.P. White Campus. Mission U. is an opportunity for people of faith to learn about the historical implications of The United Methodist Church as well as reflect on spiritual issues of the day. Debbie Rowley, dean of the United Methodist Women of Kentucky, has been involved with the group for more than 20 years and has served in many roles. "I have helped offices in my local unit, the district and conference levels," Rowley said. "I was the assistant dean in 2011 and 2012, and I'm currently serving as the Dean of Mission U." Activities at Mission U. included children's study (ages 6-11) and geographical and social issues studies for adults. The all-encompassing nature of the program is designed to reach as many groups as possible. "United Methodist Women has been on a mission for more than 140 years," Rowley said. "We are organized for mission, and our members are committed to growing as disciples of Jesus Christ in a community with other women and building the lives of women, children and youth. Mission U. allows us to come together and learn about the issues we face both locally and around the world. Rowley noted that United Methodist women have often led the way in several important areas. "We have a history of being ahead of the pack when identifying issues that impact communities such as immigration, the political struggles in the Middle East, globalization and climate change," she said. Rowley said the LWC campus has played a role in the program's success because the college has provided a home-like atmosphere for comfortable study and reflection. "We have been to other campuses, but Lindsey Wilson College is so welcoming, beautiful and accessible," she said. "And did I mention the meals are wonderful?"
